Fear Factory announce BDO Sideshows!
Fear Factory

Posted on December 10 2009

After five years with nothing but the ringing in our ears to comfort us, the silence will finally be broken this summer when FEAR FACTORY return for BIG DAY OUT.

Since forming in 1989, this Los Angeles quartet have consistently forged new territory, proving themselves masters of metal reinvention, and producing an industrial metal classic in 1995’s Demanufacture. But frayed tensions, over-exertion and personal differences led to an implosion in the early 2000s, followed by several years’ hiatus.

But the hibernating beast that is FEAR FACTORY has now reawakened, with a revamped FF line-up – singer Burton C. Bell, bassist Byron Stroud and drummer Gene Hoglan welcoming back founding member and guitarist Dino Cazares – promising raw aggression and reality.

Due in February, their long-awaited seventh album, Mechanize, is a full-fisted blast of passion and innovation that sounds like the missing link between the caustic Demanufacture and 1998’s more nuanced Obsolete. Judging by the first taste of Mechanize, single Powershifter, we’re in for something crushing and colossal, melding fast and precise rhythms, vocals that veer from raw and scathing to hauntingly melodic, punishing beats, rapid-fire riffs, ghostly keyboards and street-lethal metal.

“Powershifter is the most devastating and brutal tune in metal at the moment. The long awaited return of Dino Cazares on guitars combined with Gene Hoglan’s drums… leaves the listener with facial blisters. Burton C. Bell continues to be one of metal’s greatest frontmen, alternating between his signature death grunts and trademark melodies. …Pure ferocity.” (Gears of Rock, November 2009)

“I didn’t want any of the soundscapes to sound natural,” Bell explains. “I wanted them to be really mechanical because I wanted that aspect of FEAR FACTORY to really shine again.” Adds Cazares: “This is definitely a different chapter for us, and I think it’s the best thing we’ve ever done.”

With their 1992 debut album, Soul Of A New Machine, FEAR FACTORY seemingly appeared overnight, changing the face of heavy music forever. Fear Factory return to Australia in 2010 to prove, once again, that their status as one of metal's greatest live performers remains unsurpassed.

 My Festival Experience

Children Collide
I was very young - very very young – and I tried something for the first time and it was at Big Day Out and Sound Garden were playing and it was meant to be the last Big Day Out ever and I was lying down on the grass watching Sound Garden and feeling [ahh] pretty good. laughs

Ideal Lineup?
Wow this could take me days to go through – The Birthday Party, Scientists, The Drones, The Stabs who are a Melbourne band, Hungary Ghosts… I could go on for ever!

Fave artist you've seen at a Music Festival?
Oh, when I was really really young, too young to be at a festival I got snuck in to Summersault Festival and saw Sonic You play… that was amazing!

Tips for attending a Music Festival?
Stay out of the sun definitely! I’m a very very white man and at Big Day Out I got burnt just walking from our band tent to the stage… 30 seconds in the sun – so definitely slip slop slap!
