Following on from their incredible recent performances at this year’s Fuji Rock and Splendour In The Grass festivals, THE VINES are pleased to announce that they will be embarking upon their first full length national album tour in over four years this coming October and November in support of their brand new long-player, MELODIA.
After their many well documented trials and tribulations, no one really had the right to expect to find THE VINES in such rude health in 2008, but with the release of MELODIA, the band have come full circle, recording their best album since 'Highly Evolved' and playing the finest live shows of their career. Anyone who has witnessed the band's incendiary sets at Splendour, Homebake or Big Day Out over the past two years will attest to the fact that as a live force they are now nigh on unstoppable.
“We can’t wait to get on stage and do it properly for all of our fans,” says singer Craig Nicholls. “We feel really good about the live show at the moment, and now with four albums to pick the set from it's going to be great to change the show a little bit every night. Let US entertain YOU."
THE VINES' story is well documented now, but for those who came in late, a brief synopsis reads something like this: THE VINES emerge from the Southern suburbs of Sydney on to the world stage with their debut album 'Highly Evolved' in 2002. Five NME cover appearances, Rolling Stone, Spin and The Face covers, 1.5 million albums sold worldwide, a famously unhinged appearance on The David Letterman show, festival performances at Glastonbury, Reading, Leeds, and sold out Australian, US and European tours follow. The underrated second album, 'Winning Days' is met with a hostile press reception as Craig Nicholls’ increasingly erratic and unpredictable behaviour leads to a very public breakdown on stage at the Annandale Hotel in Sydney. Tours and appearances are immediately cancelled, and finally an explanation for Nicholls' unhinged persona comes in the form of his diagnosis with Aspergers Syndrome. In 2006 the band re-emerge with the fast and loose buzzsaw rock of 'Vision Valley', as Nicholls and company slowly and cautiously re-build his confidence and ability to face the public again. Taking a risk, the band make a surprise appearance at the 2006 Splendour in the Grass festival, where against all the odds and expectations they produce one of the most memorable and euphorically received sets of the weekend. Thereafter follow appearances at Reading and Leeds to similar receptions and a sold-out Australian tour more than two years after the famous public meltdown. More festival appearances at Homebake, Big Day Out and the Great Escape continue to re-build the band’s reputation as the most exciting live act in the country.
Which brings us to 2008, and the release of MELODIA. With the first single HE’S A ROCKER having reacquainted the listening public with the trademark razor-sharp pop instincts that led to THE VINES becoming one of Australia’s most recognisable and passionately supported bands, the band will be releasing the album’s scorching opener GET OUT to coincide with the shows, a song that has immediately become a festival crowd favourite.
With this being the band’s first full national tour since 2004, and the band in the best health and live form of their career, expect tickets for THE VINES to sell out immediately.
