Review: Them Crooked Vultures - January 25, 2010 - Brisbane Riverstage

From the moment Josh Homme, Dave Grohl and Mr. John Paul Jones walked onstage the atmosphere at Brisbane’s river stage was electric. Josh Homme declared We are the crooked vultures and we’ve come to make you dance ….and boy we did.

Opening album track “No one loves me and neither do I” had the front 3 rows moshing like a Metallica concert. Homme’s rusty guitar licks set over a dirty rolling bassline from John Paul’s lap slide bass was a sonic assault to the ears. As the crowd caught its breath “Dead end friends” let Dave Grohl show what a great drummer he is and how much better he’s become. From a few rows back you’d be mistaken for thinking it were animal form the Muppets as hair and drumsticks flew everywhere. As the vultures played “Devil in There “ Dave broke 2 sets of sticks through sheer power drumming.

Josh Homme took time out old school to introduce the band….As he uttered the words “Mr. John Paul F’’’king Jones” the Brisbane faithful roared so loud it would have been heard on The Gold Coast. Prompting Homme to quip, Its amazing every time I say John Paul Jones people just fu””king scream….

JPJ takes centre stage with a mandolin and rips into a new track Highway 1, a stoner jam that would’ve sounded at home on any Kyuss or Queens record. As headed closer to front of stage to experience the sweat and warmth of the massive crowd I realised guitars do funny things to people. The crowd noise and anticipation was so great The vultures had to restart the bridge to “Bandaliers”. John Paul and Homme declare the Brissy crowd the best of the tour. Constant chants from the female crowd members for Dave Grohl, makes Homme laugh and devote a searing version of “Mind Eraser No Chaser” to Mr Dave Grohl . But the ever-present front man Homme climbed the drum riser and pulled out all the rock moves bar guitar mouth. ( No John Mayer here folks) Mr. Brody Dalle continuing his fine form on the mic then said :“ hey’a my mate Dave was in Nirvana ….and My mate John was like in Zeppelin and shit….A funny man is Mr Homme.

This group makes you ask how is it possible to be that good, and just as you wish the gig wouldn’t end. Homme, Grohl & Jones declare that this is their last song. A rawkus 8 minute jammed out fuzzed up version of the aptly titled “ The Last Breath You Take Before You Give Up. So many words can be said about how great this band is but all I can muster is WOW.

MY FESTIVAL EXPERIENCE

My Festival Experience
Birds of Tokyo

In january 2007 we did our first Big Day Out over here in Perth & when we got on stage the security had to close the doors of the pavilion as the room capacity had been reached. Now the thing was the band on before us only got the room like a third full so for heaps of people to rock up to watch us play, at home, was something special & I haven’t forgotten that show since.

Ideal Lineup?
Firstly Weezer, I really like those guys & they play some cool rock stuff, so they’d be awesome to see. I’d also have to say Queens Of The Stone Age, these guys just put on the best show each & every time they step on stage & to see them is always amazing. So I’d go with those 2 for now.

Tips for attending a Music Festival?
Personally, I feel it comes down to just being curteous to others. I mean you go to festivals & you see people just barging through in groups or by themselves & it’s just not on in my books. I suppose drinking water & wearing proper clothing to protect yourself from the sun also help, but basically being curteous is my tip.
