Review: Laneway Festival - Friday 29 January Brisbane, QLD

Brisbane’s second installment of laneway returned to the RNA showground’s and was met with one of the best summer storms this scribe has seen in some time. So being as big a fan of my own hair as I was of the lineup. A late start was in order……

Mumford and Sons were slotted in at the rather early time of 5pm and had the largest crowd of the day greet them. It seemed Mr. Mumford was just as in awe of the crowd as it were of him. “ I cant effing believe this our first gig in Australia” “Look at all those people”. The newest holders of the Hottest 100 number 1 position had the crowd eating from their hand with stellar versions of “ Delay my soul” “ Roll away your stone” and “ The Cave”. By the time they ripped into “ Little lion man” the collective masses joined in the biggest hoedown this side of Texas. As people stomped, smiled, clapped, and sang you’d think you were in a North London pub without the fights…..This is about as tribal as white people get…

As I raced to see Daniel Johnston, I couldn’t help but hear a rawkus coming from Building 10. The Philly Jays were ripping Brisbane a new one. A lot of people turned up to hear “ The good news” ….They were greeted with even better news. Three bearded unassuming blokes from Sydney playing fuzzed out blues rock akin to The Black Keys…Set highlight watching lead vocal sung with microphone stuffed in his mouth.

Recent documentary The Devil in Daniel Johnston, brought a very young and varied crowd to the street stage. Those who didn’t know what to expect were blown away. Mr. Johnston, and his long sufferance brings a sincerity to music that cannot be matched in terms of delive3rance and performance. As he sang John Lennon’s “ You’ve got to hide you’re love away “ I was moved in ways I couldn’t describe. Amazing, tender, fragile three adjectives that don’t do the man justice.

Dappled Cities took the stage in Building 10 resplendent in gold lira suits. I was hanging to see the way these kids had progressed since they dropped the Flys from the end of their name. UNFORUNATELY…..once again sound issues struck Laneway as the front of house speakers blew midway through the 2nd song….Not happy Jan….Undeterred the lads played on…Good work guys…Now where’s that effing sound guy I’m gonna kill him!!

Sarah Blasko hit the car park stage in a striking polka dot dress and held the eyes and ears of this writer in a trance. As the ethereal vocals echoed around the car park roof, Ms Blasko did the robot dance to “ Be somebody else” and didn’t miss a note. Wow….Due to a clash though it was time to see The XX.

The XX as famous for their killer remixes as they are their own tunes, packed the Alexandra st stage like sardines in a can. Now I don’t know about you but claustrophobia sets in at a gig I don’t really enjoy myself….A little shattered as The XX were in fine form. F you get a chance to see them at a club show don’t miss it!

The black lips form Memphis Tennessee, are insane. Speed induced garage rock had the crowd shaking like a Midwest dance hall. Every track seemed to get quicker. As the bass player spat loogies on himself the lead guitarist rushed over and pashed him. Hilarious ….Homophobic people ran for the hills as the good looking girls rushed to the front. What a show….What a band!!

A long time I have waited to see Echo and The Bunnymen….. It seems I will have to wait even longer as they cancelled their Brisbane show… With no reason given… Not happy Jan!!

Arguably the biggest artist of 2009, Florence and The Machine. Kept the eager crowd waiting just long enough to build the tension to fever point. As the red haired angel of sweet song entered the stage, the crowd went into raptures. A sped up version of Kiss with a Fist saw Flo’ give the best air drumming performance this side of Wayne’s World 2. This wasn’t just a gig this was a show…Flowers adorned the vocal microphone, and a beautiful gold harp took centre stage as Florence looked almost angelic. If Florence and the Machine aren’t in your ipod already get cracking….Ya wouldn’t want to be uncool now would you??

A quick glance at uberproducers NASA made this writer one happy panda. A big spaceship encased their mixing desk whilst 3 break dancing aliens took centre stage. Un like most dj’s these guys were happy to get out and dance. Then as the NASA pilots dropped one of my remixes on an unsuspecting crowd, I went mental like a frog in a sock Great work lads the cheques in the mail!!!

Laneway, ironed out a lot of last years inadequacies and proved that this is a touring festival to be reckoned with….Look out in 2011!!

I remember seeing Blondie at the Falls Fest in 98. Brilliant. But as a kid my parents would take us to a lot of festivals. I remember running around dancing, annoying people, stealing things, so much fun.
