Review: Daniel Merriweather: Love & War

He may have thought his moment would never come. Melbourne born, London based Daniel Merriweather has been recording music for eight years but it’s not until now that his debut album Love & War has dropped. Thanks to a long term partnership with producer Mark Ronson, Merriweather is at the top of his game and ready to share his talent with Love & War.

Love & War has an old school feel to it with a new age pop sensibility with Ronson’s stamp all over it. Merriweather’s music is essentially RnB the way it used to be. Vintage amps and microphones were used to create a warm sound on the record. This, plus the use of brass throughout coupled with Merriweather’s unique story telling lyrics makes Love & War a unique offering.

First single, Change mixes Merriweather’s RnB with Wale’s hip hop interludes. The piano introduction is haunting, with the use of a brass section giving Change an almost gospel feel. Chainsaw is upbeat retro, the simple lyric ‘Giving myself to you is like giving myself to a chainsaw’, making it a catchy track. Cigarettes features a muffled snare drum with Merriweather’s vocal oozing his poetic lyrics; ‘Life is like a old cassette you can’t rewind’. Could You features the backup vocals you imagine to hear on a classic 1970’s hit while Giving Everything Away For Free shows off Merriweather’s smooth vocal at its best. UK soul singer Adele lends her voice to the beautiful Water and a Flame, a track designed to be a conversation between two people in a broken relationship.

Merriweather-Ronson partnership has hit the mark with Love & War, an album that’s classy jazz feel will appeal to older generations, while the RnB elements will reel in Generation Y. Love & War makes the listener feel good, and who doesn’t want to feel good. Keep your eye on Daniel Merriweather; he’s an artist to watch.

It’s too hard to pick one, we love festivals. In no particular order: Playing the big Dance Arena at Glastonbury 2008, Main Stage Good Vibrations 2007, Splendour in the Grass 2007, Big Day Out 2009...I could go on and on.

What would be your Ideal Lineup?
One stage with David Bowie, Queen (we’d have to bring Freddie back from the dead), Daft Punk, The Cure, Bloc Party, Prince & Bon Jovi (yes, Bon Jovi). There would be DJ sets in between by Sven Vath, Boys Noize and me old mate Ajax.
