Review: Starting Sunday: Starting Sunday

Melbourne four piece Starting Sunday (formerly Front Counter) announced their new line up earlier this year which saw backup singer Rhys Thompson step into the lead vocalist role and newcomer Basil Yu join on bass after two members of the band walked out. The change of line up meant a new name was in order to announce their new sound, and Starting Sunday was born.

The EP features four tracks about being young, love, and sticking together when times are tough. Overall, the tracks are easy to listen to with sing along choruses, boundless energy and rocking guitar solos. Feeling It Now is an infectious track bursting with energy and youth. The opening guitar riff will have audiences finding it hard to keep still. Losing Sleep, about not being able to stop thinking about a certain someone who is not feeling the same way, has a killer guitar solo like the rock tracks of the 80’s, and will be a winner amongst teenage girls everywhere. Lost Ourselves is slower and anthem-like, about the music industry and the journey the band has been on so far. When You’re Around was inspired by the guys leaving the band, about pulling together even when you’re down and out and shows that the transition from back up to lead vocalist was a wise choice for Thompson.

Starting Sunday have a solid sound, their melodies are infectious and energy leaps from the speakers. The new musical direction works, and as a young band, they have a long future ahead of them.
