Review: Rob Thomas: Cradlesong

The second solo album from the Matchbox 20 front man is a collection of well written contemporary pop rock tracks, but nothing outstanding. This time Thomas’ material is darker, exploring the fragility of human relationships, and musically is not as varied as his solo debut Something To Be.

First single Her Diamonds has enjoyed radio airplay and features Thomas’ distinct vocal. The track, inspired by his wife’s health and their day to day struggle with hard times, is a beautiful tribute to the feeling of being helpless despite effort. Give Me The Meltdown has oomph and a catchy melody that will have audiences at his upcoming tour yelling back the lyrics. Love song Someday is bound to be a radio favourite, the gospel feel towards the end of the track leaving listeners uplifted. ‘Hey yeah, welcome to the real world’ Thomas croons on Real World ’09, the track sounds joyous thanks to bouncing guitars despite the lyrics. Fire On The Mountain’s pounding drum intro creates atmosphere for a track that tries to majestic but just falls flat and is a slow point on the record. Natural explores a smooth groove feel with a string section pulling back to create intimate moments, whereas Wonderful has rock roots, mixed with a brilliant brass explosion to give it a jazz infused vibe. The simplicity of Snowblind is beautiful, the lyrics matched perfectly with a delicate intro and easy melody make it a stand out on the album. The title track is the only ballad-esque track here, ‘All our friends have moved to Hollywood, but we ain't that desperate yet’, shows Thomas’ appreciation for the simpler things in life as he gets older, while the acoustic guitar on the stripped back Getting Late has an almost country feel as Thomas ponders his own mortality; ‘You’re watching over the moments that make up your life, It’s getting late, that’s the way it is’.

Thomas is arguably the most established songwriter of his generation but sadly his best work may be behind him. Cradlesong will please the faithful fans and is a worthy soundtrack to a BBQ with friends.

when I was younger all I did was listen to bad religion so when I finally got to see them on a warped tour it was life changing.

4 bands, 20 minute sets, free nachos and beer

What are your tips for attending Music Festivals?
Pace yourself. When we played ozzfest in 2004 there were dudes getting kicked out for being too drunk at 11am. You bought the ticket, at least take the ride
