Review: Something With Numbers: Engineering The Soul

Something With Numbers have created something quite special with Engineering the Soul. The third album from the Central Coast lads is a mix of joy, longing, angst and love.

Stay With Me Bright Eyes, the album's first single is instantly likeable. The chorus gets stuck in your head and the offbeat lyrics of the verse are so appealing. This track had me singing along from the get go.

We'll Fight is such a sweet love song. The emotion in Grigg's vocal is heard through the lyrics: 'Against the world we've got each other'. The use of trumpets towards the end signifies a victory in what perhaps wasn't always an easy road in a relationship.

The intro on Twisted is almost haunting, and then bursts with the opening guitar riff into a solid rock song. The greatest thing about Engineering the Soul is SWN's ability to move between genres, tempos and intensities with such ease.

Diamonds creates a feeling of peace and comfort: 'Curl up next to me and we can breathe the same air and think our thoughts out loud'. This track comes from a place of such love that all these people need to do is co-exist and they’ll be happy.

89 Freedom Street is pure joy, reminiscing about the days of young adulthood and the freedom that comes with that time. Definitely a track the crowd can get into at a live show!

Grigg's vocal shines on Yesterday, a softer track making use of the trumpet and saxophone again. This song about feeling lost and trying to move forward is executed beautifully and is a highlight on the album. If you listen closely to the track, there is a small tribute to the band's home town on the Central Coast of NSW.

Don't Spend Forever is SWN's piece of advice to make the most of life and don't waste time waiting for might be. Wise words!

The album finishes the way it begins, with a love song. I'll Be There is beautifully simple, stripped back to just a piano and vocal. Whoever these tracks are written about should consider themselves one lucky girl!

Something With Numbers have nailed the pop rock genre. Each track on Engineering the Soul is as diverse and likeable as the previous. From up-beat pop tracks, emotional love songs and guitar driven rock, SWN have created an album that will last the distance and be appreciated by a variety of music fans.

We did a festival in melbourne and it was a great. We got to hang out with Grinspoon and drink with those guys.

What are your tips for attending Music Festivals?Don't get drunk to quick. Pace yourself. So many people drink really quick at the start and it always ends up messy.

Favourite Music Festival?
I would have to say 'Big Day Out'. To any band it is great to be able to perform there its an honor. I was happy because when we did it 'Rage Against The Machine' were also playing that year and it was just one band I had always wanted to see play.

What's your ideal music festival line-up?Blink 182, Greenday and if I gould dig Jeff Buckley up, I would have him there to.

Favourite artist you’ve seen at a Music Festival?
Rage Against The Machine.
