Review: Jet: Shaka Rock

Much has been written about Jet’s return to the musical world. After the disappointing reaction to their second album, Shine On, anticipation has been high to see whether Jet are able to return to the former greatness of their debut, Get Born. Even front man Nic Cester said ‘Shaka Rock is the third album. We did the third one secondly, unfortunately.’ Modern day rock ‘n’ rollers, with a hint of the Clash and a lot of the Beatles, Jet’s sound has always been unique. The band describes Shaka Rock as a new beginning, but they have both hits and misses here.

First single She’s a Genius set up Shaka Rock to be everything Get Born was. Infectiously catchy, it’s the best track on the album, but the rest fails to stack up. Beat on Repeat is boring and dare I say, repetitive. The overdone snarl by drummer Chris Cester makes it feel like Jet are trying too hard. La Di Da is energetic and different but nothing special. On Black Hearts (On Fire), Nic Cester’s vocal is as fantastically rough as ever while showing a more melodic style on the gem Seventeen. Goodbye Hollywood tells of Jet’s time in the US, being sucked in and spit out by the culture and celebrity machine of California. A clear theme resonating on Shaka Rock is Jet’s retaliation against the circle of people they kept close to in the past, on Let Me Out, singing ’ I don’t have time for people to dragging me down’ . Closer She Holds A Grudge is beautifully delicate, showing Jet still have the touch that bought us the incredible Look What You’ve Done.

Shaka Rock has a few shining moments, Seventeen and Goodbye Hollywood are worth remembering, as well as the hit She’s A Genius, but overall, it’s much of a muchness. I just hope Shaka Rock is not the album that makes Jet disappear forever.

 My Festival Experience

I remember at the Falls Festival a few years ago after we played there we got one of those little train vehicles and jumped out in the middle of night to this creek bed and went to this little revien and sat there and our eyes started to adjust to the darkness and what was creepy were these things... on the walls they were filled with these glow worms and it was the most fantastic thing... all these different colours- purple, green, white all glowing and that was the most amazing festival experience I've ever had!

When I see a band I always have a moment in show when you have an epiphone at some point when this band is kicking, or the band is about to hit a peak, or something that the drummer does like knock this bottle of beer off the stand [laughs] or something crazy when there is just this sudden abrupt thing and everyone just lets go and that’s what I love of that experience... people not worrying about the past or the future.

Ideal Lineup?
On a historical sense, definately love to have Bob Marley of course, but apart from that I really love going to festivals because you see bands that you’ve never heard of before and you know that’s how I met Blue King Brown, Ben Harper, Jack Johnson, R.E.M., John Butler, The Public Enemy... throw any of those bands on a festival and it will be good but its about finding something that you never imagined.

Tips for attending Music Festivals?
My tips [laughs]... Always bring your own roll of toilet paper and the other is only look at the festival schedule if absolutely necessary... like if you know that the Black Keys are your most favourite band in the world and you need to know what time they are playing, then look at the schedule but otherwise just walk around!
