Review: Sick Puppies: Tri-Polar

The world spins on without much time to stop for free hugs these days. But Sick Puppies makes their presence felt yet again on their new album, ‘Tri-Polar’, one that is edgier than their previous, ‘Dressed Up as Life’ but altogether not too different.

What sticks out in ‘Tri-Polar’ is one of its ballads, ‘White Balloon’, which opens up with Emma Anzai’s voice that takes a breath of Amy Lee’s brooding whispers. Each song on ‘Tri-Polar’ plays up different moods, moving from soothing strum of acoustic guitars into grungy anthems and vice versa. ‘So What I Lied’ and ‘Should’ve Known Better’ hold pop-rock overtones of Hoobastank and Nickelback and a tinge of Green Day.

‘Maybe’ is a feel-good number, where frontman Shimon Moore’s vocals seem eager to break away from the calmness of lower registers in verses to embrace the zenith of the song’s chorus, “Maybe it’s time to change/And leave it all behind/I’ve never been one to walk alone/I’ve always been scared to try/So why does it feel so wrong/To reach for something more/Don’t wanna live a better life/What am I waiting for?/Cause nothing stays the same/Maybe it’s time to change.”

Production team, Rock Mafia, known for their pop-rock sensibilities, etches their sounds here in ‘Tri-Polar’ as they have in ‘Dressed Up as Life’. While Sick Puppies seems to have gained more experience and matured after three years on the road in the US, and with their song ‘War’ already featured on Street Fighter’s campaign video, ‘Tri-Polar’ seems more of an ode to bigger dreams than a satisfactory finish. As Moore sings, “Maybe I’m a dreamer/Maybe I’m misunderstood/Maybe you’re not seeing the side of me you should.”

 My Festival Experience

Sneaky Sound System
It’s too hard to pick one, we love festivals. In no particular order: Playing the big Dance Arena at Glastonbury 2008, Main Stage Good Vibrations 2007, Splendour in the Grass 2007, Big Day Out 2009...I could go on and on.

What would be your Ideal Lineup?
One stage with David Bowie, Queen (we’d have to bring Freddie back from the dead), Daft Punk, The Cure, Bloc Party, Prince & Bon Jovi (yes, Bon Jovi). There would be DJ sets in between by Sven Vath, Boys Noize and me old mate Ajax.

Favourite artist you've seen at a Music Festival? Daft Punk, David Bowie & Bloc Party

What are your tips for attending Music Festivals?
Enter with an open mind and leave with a twisted one.
