Red Alert! Three years after their last studio release, the world’s favourite asthmatics are back with their follow-up to the 2005 Make Believe with their dubiously coloured coded Red Album (following the vein of previous Green Album and Blue Album releases)! Produced by legendary producers Rick Rubin and Jacknife Lee.
Fronted by the man whose reputation contradicts such calmness his name evokes (Rivers Cuomo), the band kick off proceedings with hook laden rant Troublemaker, a kickass song that you can’t help but think could be used for the opening credits of yet another American Pie sequel starring Stifler’s Third Cousin (!!)… but still Weezer somehow manage to pull it off (no pun intended - seriously).
This is followed by the tale of The Greatest Man that Ever Lived, an experimental effort which meanders its way through countless musical genres, featuring a piano driven hip hop intro, rock guitar riffs, Cuomo’s trademark falsetto, chanting choirs, and even a “System Of A Down” style melodic rant.
“I aint got a thing to prove to you” is what Cuomo sings on Pork and Beans, proudly declaring his unsavoury eating habits of eating candy with Pork and Beans – a habit I’m not keen on following. It’s a fitting ‘up yours’ to high (or otherwise) society expectations and is clearly the standout track of the album.
Upbeat Everybody Get Dangerous passes as another catchy rock track with funky edge however the album suddenly shifts into cruise control with the dreary Dreamin’, Cold Dark World, and Automatic.
Whilst immediately commanding listeners’ attention on first rotation, the hooks become all too predictable, and lyrics, trivial. Diehard fans may disagree.
