I wasn't sure what to expect from Death Cab for Cutie.
The first listen didn't grab me, the second was not much better then I realized when I wasn't listening to Narrow Stairs I was humming or singing parts of it.
It is a subtle album.
Singer Ben Gibbard's vocals are unique and yet familiar, couple that with catchy guitar melodies and complimenting rhythms you have an album that really does make you want to listen again and again. Stand out songs are Cath..., Your New Twin Sized Bed and I Will Possess Your Heart.
The first single, I Will Possess Your Heart, has drawn mixed responses from fans and critics due mainly to its 4 and a half minute introduction but once you get through the intro you'll find one of the best songs on the album and it's lyrics sum up the album perfectly "You gotta spend some time with me. And I know that you'll find, love. I will possess your heart."
Don't dismiss this album on the first listen, it's a grower. Whilst it will be overshadowed by bigger name bands I really do believe this will be one of my favourite albums of the year. 4 out of 5.
