Madonna’s decision to team up with Justin Timberlake may be the best thing about her latest release ’Hard Candy’. Although the album photography proves Madonna is as hot approaching 50 as she was when Like A Virgin came out, the music on her sticky and sweet album is somewhat shallow.
With tracks produced by Pharrell, Timbaland, and Justin Timberlake, Hard Candy will satisfy, and is sure to be a dance floor hit. 4 Minutes is the standout track and the perfect choice for the first single. JT’s influence is heard throughout the album, lending his writing skills to 5 of the tracks, Pharell contributing to the other 7.
With repetitive beats, simple melodies and lyrics, the rhyming on Give It To Me and Heartbeat is sometimes cringeworthy. Miles Away shows Madonna’s sweeter side, and all girls will be able to relate to She’s Not Me, a track about a boyfriend’s new lover. Incredible tells of the deliriously happy stage at the beginning of a relationship, with Dance 2 Night conveying a 70’s disco vibe. The slower paced Devil Wouldn’t Recognise You shows off more of Madonna’s vocals, and the piano interludes are a nice change from the rest of the album which is heavy on effects. The catchy melody on Beat Goes On, featuring Kanye West, will satisfy fans but overall the album lacks depth.
Madonna’s Hard Candy won’t change the world, but then again, I don’t think that’s what she’s aiming for. The catchy melodies and dance floor beats are sure to please a new generation of fans, and there’s no arguing with the fact that Madonna is the hottest 50 year old in the business!
