“Little Animals” is the latest offering and ninth album from the “Beast of Bourbon” boys from Sydney. Their career spans well over a decade since the original formation of then side project “Beasts of Bourbon,” which has iconic status amongst the Australian pub rock scene.
“Little Animals” is a ten track album and features old fashioned rock ’n’ roll with a hint of American-style country music. The sound is rough and sometimes heavy as lead singer Tex Perkins raspy vocals are backed by intensive heavy riffs and guitar solos. Most songs range around two minutes but title track “Little Animals” is a change of pace with a welcoming distinctive haunting sound, although it seems a little too long clocking in at an excessive 5 minutes. “The Beast I Came to Be” is a good fast paced guitar solo intensive track but “New Day of the Dead” is the standout of the album. It shows an accomplished raw sound which could be an interesting direction the band could pursue. Although slower its still has a good hook featuring the omnipresent guitar and is the most radio friendly song on the record.
Although stylistically each track on “Little Animals” has a similar sound and the lyrics are not the most imaginative; the album is a solid offering to fans that enjoy their home-grown Aussie pub rock. |
