Having never heard of the name “Daughtry” beforehand and from looking at the dreary album cover I didn’t have any high expectations …
However, with names such as Chris Lord-Alge and Howard Benson involved not to mention Slash featuring in one of the tracks I was curious as to who this worthy project was. This is Chris Daughtry’s debut self titled album and what came as a surprise to me is that Daughtry is a former 2006 American Idol contestant - not that that detracts in any way from the product. If only the contestants of Australia’s version of Idol released such albums.
Daughtry’s style of alternate rock is energetic and infectious as every song has an anthemic hook. Upon hitting play the first track and first single “It’s Not Over” immediately conveys the energy of the album and the amazing vocals of Daughtry, which are backed by a guitar itching to get to the catchy chorus. The epic rock pop second single “Over You” flirts between soft and loud and is sure to get stuck in your head.
Another track “What I Want” has a heavier and more metal sound featuring guitar solos by non other than Slash. Softer track “Breakdown” is far from the token ballad on the album, as Draughty's raspy strong voice turns falsetto but then soon morphs back into his full fledged rock attack. All 12 tracks on the album are conveyed with meaning but “All These Lives” is a lyrically darker and more haunting song.
There is no doubt “Daughtry” is a superb album – especially for a debut. It features superior and almost seasoned- professional song writing by Chris Daughtry. He also possesses a pure strong voice with the gift of translating meaning and energy well onto the record. Every song has a new element yet the album retains a common epic alternate rock theme. No wonder this album is breaking all records in the US. This record will be to my own surprise staying in the CD player. |
