Plain gutsy hard rock that packs plenty of punches is the element that makes us Surrender to freestates debut LP. With crunching riffs, intrepid bass lines, and ear splitting melodies, the Melbourne 4 piece have created a sound that a lot of Aussie rock fans have been craving for the last few years. The opener “SOS” sets the tone for the album with a strong thumping intro and showcases the diverse vocal range of vocalist Drew Kario. The mood continues throughout the experimental lead single “Necessary” and goes on further on the jumpy but hard edged “Lately”. “The Man Who Couldn’t Lie” and the Dark New Day influenced “Heart Of Stone” have the pace slowed down for the listener to catch their breath, but show a more melodical side to the band. Lyrically the album is influenced from the people that have surrounded Freestate throughout their lives, but keep song meanings open for the listener to relate to. Guitar solos are an element that has been missing of late, but the boys are not afraid to showcase them in the head banging track “Naked” and the fast paced, road trip worthy “Firefly”. So stick Surrender in your stereo, crank it up loud, and by the end of it you’ll know that there is hope out there for the Rock world. Are You Ready? |
