After having to wait four years for Fall Out Boy to reach our shores a sold out crowd on Saturday night at the Brisbane Convention Centre eagerly awaited the US prince’s of pop-punk’s arrival.
Never afraid to make fun of themselves, FOB made their entrance on stage to the tune of a pre-recorded rap announcement proclaiming Fall Out Boy is in da house. From then on there was no looking back as they launched into a high impact energetic set with “Our Lawyer Made Us Change the Name Of this Song So We Wouldn't Get Sued.”
Completely in their element bassist Pete Wentz and guitarist Joe Trohman animated the stage jumping off speakers, leaping around and alternating microphones while singer Patrick Stump belted out his vocal harmonies and a shirt-less Andy Hurley got hot at work behind the drums.
The set list included many fan favourites from their previous album “From Under the Cork Tree” like “Sugar We’re Going Down,” and “A Little Less Sixteen Candles, a Little More Touch Me.” When they played current chart topping single This Ain’t a Scene, It’s an Arms Race” off the new album “Infinity On a High” Patrick’s job was made redundant as the crowd managed to carry the chorus - albeit a little out of tune! Another memorable moment was during the song “Golden,” where Patrick took the spotlight as the other boys disappeared into the darkness. A consensus amongst fans however, was the shocking absence from the show of the predicted hit and personal favourite song of the new album: “Thnks fr th mmrs” aka Thanks for the Memories.
Bassist and teenage heartthrob Pete Wentz well known for taking on the unofficial role of front man even as bassist (forever giving hope to all band members around the world who have always been side lined by the lead singer!), often spoke between songs and much to the delight of the females in the crowd even declared that he would love to settle down in Australia with an ‘Aussie chic.’
Instead of having an encore FOB opted to have an outrageous and unforgettable intermission which ranged from a friend of the band’s being suited up as a cricketer to him stripping down to the infamous and disturbing Borat swimsuit.
They then resumed their set with “I Slept With Someone in Fall Out Boy and All I Got Was This Stupid Song Written About Me” and later just as Pete managed to dodge another set of shoes and glow sticks being flung at him, he proclaimed in amusement that Australian crowds throw too many things on stage and invited the males in the crowd to take off their shirts and throw them instead! A riotous rendition of “Dance, Dance” ensued and impressed by the crowds enthusiasm at one point Pete even ordered a roadie into the crowd to start a circle pit - much to the horror of security staff!
In fitting fashion “Saturday” ended the memorable Saturday night and making it even more so memorable Pete Wentz broke routine as he threw his bass away high into the air (safely caught by a roadie) whilst rushing to the front of stage and grabbed a mic to do lead vocals. He then finished the night by leaping into an exhilarated audience who all feverishly clambered in his direction in an attempt to touch their idol!
The exhausted crowd was left buzzing and with the promise that the boys plan to return soon ringing in their ears – eager to do it all over again! |
