Don’t judge this one by its cover! The Used’s second DVD “Berth” cover artwork is simply amazing with deserving credit to cult artist Alex Pardee. “Berth” contains two discs: one with over 2.5 hours of live footage, behind the scenes, an eccentric band Q&A and a CD featuring nine live tracks.
The DVD feature includes five minute intros to each of the remaining three members of the band: Bert McCracken, Quinn Allman and Jeph Howard and a general insight into their recording processes for their old album “In Love and Death” with a short preview of the future release “Lies for the Liars.” The footage also includes a documentary on “The Lifestyle of The Used” and as the names suggests depicts The Used leading the general rockstar life and shows the band meeting their adoring fans. There is also an exclusive preview of a new track “Handsome Awkward.”
Ex best friend Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance also makes a cameo appearance praising The Used’s work ethic and ironically their great personality. Notably, there is also special footage of Bert McCracken’s guest appearance onstage on Linkin Park’s Projekt Revolution tour engaging in a scream fest with Chester Bennington.
The big disappointment of this DVD is the footage quality which is sometimes extremely grainy and dark making it hard to see, but also that half the video involves blurred out faces of non-consenting participants. Additionally, as a result of some of the original footage being lost and drummer Branden Steinekcert leaving the band new footage was recorded which is reminiscent of the movie “Jackass.”
The nine tracks on the live CD are from the same Canadian show featured on the DVD and the majority of songs are from their old album “In Love and Death” including the hit singles “I Caught Fire,” “All That I Got” and “Take It Away.”
“Berth” is a neat package and a must for only a big fan of The Used. It fills in the time adequately till their next album “Lies for the Liars” is due out in May this year.
