Its kind of sad when half the crowd doesn't know who Chris Cornell is, the once-Soundgarden come Audioslave front man erupted on to the stage however the lack of energy from the somewhat teeny-bopper crowd definitely took away from an awesome set of a true legend of rock.
Last year I saw Fort Minor play at the Palace, and it was probably one of the emptiest shows I’d ever been to at the now burnt down legend, even with Mike Shinoda fronting the band. On this occasion however, with the show selling out in mere minutes, the crowd packed Rod Laver Arena, filled it to the rafters.
The stage, hidden from the public’s eye with the ever-so-used stage cover allowed for the atmosphere to skyrocket, fueled on by the obligatory beach ball in general admission (it’s amazing how entertaining a beach ball can be when you are waiting for your favorite band to hit the stage).
As the curtain dropped, an elaborate stage setup set the scene for a night of Linkin Park, both new and old. With resident DJ Joe Hahn accompanied by precisionist Rob Bourdon up high, the set was definitely made for LP as co-frontman Chester bounced down the stairs much to the delight of the already bouncing crowd.
I’ve gotta admit, after I saw Linkin Park play at Livid back in 2004 I was less than impressed, in fact, to put it blunt, they sucked, so I didn’t build up great expectations for the night… but fuck, I was enthralled.
Producing an amazing mix of both good and old, Linkin Park delivered for fans both new and old covering their older hybrid theory days with Crawling and One Step Closer for fans of old and the more recent What I’ve Done and Bleed it Out.
It was a relief for me at least for Linkin Park to play there tracks fairly straight as they were originaly recorded, with little touch on their second album, re-animation.
As the show neared the end, all but Mike and Chester left the stage to perform an amazing acoustic set of ballads, with Mike on keys and Chester sitting down in a manner that was so not Chester.
The ever so predictable encore was completed with In the End which definitely capped off a night of superb music.
