ARTIST INTERVIEW
Access All Areas.net.au: So tell us your story thus far, how you got to where you are now?
Yidcore: Started as a university revue skit, accidentally got signed in America, toured overseas a whole bunch and then decided yidiocy is universal so concentrated on making things happen in Australia. Lots of stages destroyed, celebrities baited, hummus smeared, falafels eaten, and grandmas hit on. Its been a great fun road thus far and its just getting more fun by the day.

Access All Areas.net.au: Yidcore are an independent band, do you feel you have more control over your career as an independent band?
Yidcore: Yes and no. We certainly have more choice over our direction but I don’t think we could possibly be steered without it not become authentic Yidcore. The only downside is that ur fighting the corporate giants who tend to sweep indie bands aside to make way for their slickly packaged corporate whores.

Access All Areas.net.au: Can you tell us a bit about your music?
Yidcore: It’s a head on collision between rampant stupidity, punk schlock, three thousand year old tradition and sacramental wine. Or as someone once nicely summed it up, Mel Brooks on speed.

Access All Areas.net.au: You’re about to release your new double album, can you tell us about this release?
Yidcore: Eighth Day Slice is 17 tracks of fun punk pranksterism, recorded over the space of 4 weeks. Its urgent, silly and a nice escape from the sludgy world of serious music. Fiddlin On Ya Roof is a star studded, fully orchestrated punk reworking of the classic Broadway musical Fiddler On the Roof. It stars people like Renee Geyer, Ben Lee, John Safran, Ella Hooper, Angie Hart and a whole bunch of other people from Australia and overseas. I think it’s the first time something like this has been attempted and was an absolute monster to do, taking two and a half years!!!

Access All Areas.net.au: You’ve also done a cover of the Bette Midler classic ‘Wind Beneath My Wings’? Wow that’s something new from a rock band, why that song and exactly how did you pull that song off?
Yidcore: I love Bette. I love that song. I think it’s the ultimate schmaltzy ballad. So we thought it would be funny to give it a bit of a kick in the ass. It was the pinnacle of an obsession that had previously culminated in our contribution to a split CD of Bette Midler and Barbra Streisand covers. But on that we did “From A Distance”. I’m not too sure how we managed to make it sound like a decent punk song but it still makes us laugh and that’s a good thing.

Access All Areas.net.au: I’m very impressed with you guys because you’re not your average rock band… you do everything differently to the traditional method… there’s the remake of the Bette Midler song, release of a double album and you’ve also released a DVD Single in the lead up to the album release. How has this worked for you, and tell us, what other crazy things can we expect in the future!?
Yidcore: Shux thanks. We love pushing the envelope as much as we can whether it be poking fun at our culture or totally pissing off celebrities. Music should be about taking risks and having fun while doing it. So far our stunts seem to have been well received but I think we’re always ready for a kick in the teeth. But better that than to sit complacently in the soup of everyone else. I wish I could tell you what to expect next but we tend to fly by the seat of our pants so we don’t even know. I mean Fiddler hit us all of a sudden on a subway in New York late at night on our way home from a show so you never know where or when the inspiration hits. But hopefully it will be funny and interesting. I have a short attention span.

Access All Areas.net.au: How would you choose to describe your music to someone who was unfamiliar with it?
Yidcore: An explosion of cultural stupidity.

Access All Areas.net.au: Which artists are you and/or your music influenced by?
Yidcore: NOFX, Mel Brooks, Lenny Bruce, Frenzal Rhomb, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, The Ramones, a lot of old Broadway stuff.

Access All Areas.net.au: What has been the major highlight or highpoint for you thus far?
Yidcore: We’ve been lucky to have so many amazing things happen. Touring America and Israel, having a Channel V Ripe clip, the Discovery Channel thing, making the American papers for fighting with Adam Sandler, signing with Rubber, getting to work with a whole bunch of our heroes. But probably the coolest thing was to be holed up in a New York studio with Daniel Rey (Ramones, Misfit) and have him tell me to be careful with the microphone because “the last person to sing into this microphone was Joey Ramone”. I can die happy.

Access All Areas.net.au: When a fan goes to one of your shows, what can they expect?
Yidcore: At first, to be confused. Then to start smiling and jumping around. And then to play “Dodge the hummus” or “Catch Timmy’s flying slippers”.

Access All Areas.net.au: What has been a major stepping stone for getting you where you are today?
Yidcore: Stupid as it sounds, coming up with the idea to do Fiddler. It got us reinvigorated, hooked us up with so many amazing people, gave us something to obsess over for two years and got people interested in what we were doing. Just goes to show sometimes thinking outside the square is worth all the heartache.

Access All Areas.net.au: What are your plans from here?
Yidcore: Touring. Having fun with this monster we call Fiddlin On Ya Roof. Writing some new stuff. Living as fast as possible. But making sure we’re always home in time for a bowl of our grandmother’s chicken soup.

 My Festival Experience

Shout Out Louds
Your most memorable Festival moment or experience?
Our stage manager once fixed things so that I could stand on a podium on the side of the stage and pretend to set my keyboards up while Roky Erickson played a packed tent at Hultsfred in Sweden. He’s very aloof and doesn’t like to have people too close while he plays, so I made myself small and was quiet as a mouse but it was such a treat to get to watch him that closely, he’s just great.

Favourite Artist you’ve seen at a Music Festival?
Leonard Cohen’s performance at Coachella last year was about as magical as it gets.

What’s your ideal Festival line-up?
Us, PB&J, Jay-Z, Kitty Daisy and Lewis, The Essex Green, Cass McCombs, Joni Mitchell, The Brunettes, Magic Numbers, and Florence Foster Jenkins but she’s dead unfortunately. I can already see this wouldn’t fly with Jay-Z, but I’d settle for just one or two of the above.

What are your tips for attending Music Festivals?
Dress to avoid getting cold, wet or sunburned, and take off on your own. In my experience committing to meeting up with too many people always ends up ruining the whole damn thing.
