ARTIST INTERVIEW
Access All Areas.net.au: Congratulations firstly on your ARIA Award nomination for Best Independent Release, you must be excited?
Wolf & Cub:Very excited and pretty proud actually. We're glad it's the independent category because I was having a look through all the categories and I couldn't find a more appropriate on to be nominated in. Anywhere else wouldn't really feel justified to me, not that I don't think there were any other bands that deserved a nomination, I just feel like if there was a category that we would ever deserve to me in than this would be the one. For the record I wouldn't have been disappointed to see The Drones or Snowman in our place.

Access All Areas.net.au: How did you find out about the nomination and was there a lot of celebrating?
Wolf & Cub:Our Manager Tim was there at the event and he called me, I think I was getting a coffee heading into the rehearsal space. It was quite an exciting feeling actually. When I told the guys there was some brief bouts of dis-belief and denial, which is pretty common with us, we talked about it started feeling better about ourselves and went on with practice, which from recollection was pretty average. I do remember texting alot of people.

Access All Areas.net.au: Earlier this year you toured with the Kaiser Chiefs, how was that tour?
Wolf & Cub:It was nice to play some shows in Australia, we'd been away for most of the first half of the year so it was good to be home, although e shows came at a pretty awkward time for us as we'd lost a member of the band, Adam, so we were working hard in rehearsals getting the new guy, Marvin up to speed. It was nice playing such big venues, we'd never played the Horden before so that was exciting. Too be honest I don't think our hearts, or heads were really into it. We were hoping to showcase some new material on those shows but we just didn't have the time to prepare, and Adam had left the band so there was some hesitation about going out and getting excited about playing the same set. We had just started to think about the next record and wanted to concentrate on writing new material. They were great guys, but it just felt that, at that particular time, we didn't really want to be there.

Access All Areas.net.au: That invite to support them came personally by the Kaiser Chiefs after they heard your single on a London radio station, that must've been a surreal experience for a band such as Kaiser Chiefs to be calling you guys?
Wolf & Cub:Yes it is a little, I think because we didn't really think that we'd appeal to the Kaiser Chiefs audience, so I guess, that led us to believe that we wouldn't appeal to the band themselves. I guess it's become one of the many pleasant surprises that we've experienced in our time. It is really exciting and humbling sometimes to think that you can have a little bit of appeal outside of your home country, even in you own country for that matter.

Access All Areas.net.au: You're playing the, now sold out, Pyramid Festival on New Years, playing alongside other atists like Hilltop Hoods, Grinspoon, The Cat Empire, You Am I, Sneaky Sound System, The Matches (USA), Kisschasy, who are you guys looking forward to seeing?
Wolf & Cub:I'm always looking forward to seeing You Am I, for me it's always a bit educational, and Howling Bells.

Access All Areas.net.au: You're currently working on your new album, how is that going?
Wolf & Cub:Really well actually, and I'm really surprising myself by how confident I am about that. Usually I would feel negative and self-deprecating about our new material, but the new songs are really exciting to play. I think it's because of the new member in the band, Marvin Hammond, he's breathing new life into us, it's a very positive time for Wolf & Cub at the moment, that 's the best way to articulate it!

Access All Areas.net.au: What can fans expect from your new material and when can we expect it to be in stores?
Wolf & Cub:Well I'm going to be optimistic and say mid-next year, but who knows with us, we've got a schedule that says mid-net year but we usually have trouble meeting deadlines. Definitely next year though.

Access All Areas.net.au: Whats ahead for Wolf & Cub?
Wolf & Cub:A few shows here and there, but the majority of our efforts will be devoted to the next album for now.

Wolf and Cub play Sounds In The Ground on November 2 at Sydney University.
ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Wolf & Cub are from Adelaide, Australia.

Joel Byrne, Adam Edwards and Thomas Mayhew all aimlessly drifted in to town some years back hell bent on nothing in particular. Crossing paths with kindred spirit Joel Carey they were soon stockpiling cheap instruments, affordable amps and expensive pedals… and generating their own energy.

Much has happened since then.

Wolf & Cub have shared stages with TV On The Radio, The Killers, The Music, Wolfmother, Queens of the Stone Age, Hot Hot Heat, Futureheads, and Death From Above 1979… played blistering sets nationwide on this years Big Day Out… performed at Meredith Music Festival and Homebake… and headlined their own national tour.

On the strength of their two EPs to date they have been signed by 4AD, (home of TV On The Radio, The Pixies, Breeders, Thievery Corporation, Mountain Goats) which will see the legendary UK label release Wolf & Cub’s music outside of Australia and New Zealand.

The band’s early tracks have been remixed by Paul Epworth (Bloc Party, The Futureheads, Maximo Park) and Minotaur Shock Bloc Party, Super Furry Animals).

Late last year Wolf & Cub toured Japan and the UK, with BBC radio’s legendary Steve Lamacq bestowing Single of the Week status on the band. Influential DJ John Kennedy at London’s XFM also gave strong support and the UK music sites and mags started to pay attention.

Wolf & Cub released their debut album on September 2.

The album, entitled Vessels, was recorded in Adelaide and mixed in Glasgow, Scotland with producer Tony Doogan, who has previously worked with Mogwai, Super Furry Animals, Belle & Sebastian and Mountain Goats. Vessels features nine completely new tracks from the band and a reworking of their earlier single Steal Their Gold.

Vessels is released on Dot Dash here in Australia and on the legendary 4ad label ((home of TV On The Radio, The Pixies, Breeders, Thievery Corporation, Mountain Goats) elsewhere in the world

“Wolf & Cub rip a hole in the rock scene” Dazed & Confused UK

“Wolf & Cub meld every great moment in music ever into the hottest new thing on the planet” NME

“With their monstrous twin drums and club like bass they are an awesome prospect” Artrocker

Vessels album review 8/10 – Blunt Sep 06 ‘basslines that penetrate deep into your core, dragging you in to feel the rhythm. WAC have managed to harness the experimentation of their live show and create an awesome album.’

Vessels album review 4* - Lifelounge Sep 06 ‘this stuff has balls and earthy determination… brilliant mesmerizing anthems like ‘Vessel’s and ‘March of Clouds’ throw out hints of Mars Volta, Death From Above and Kyuss, yet WAC maintain their individuality and reek of great things to come’

**** album review, Zoo Weekly w/c August 28 ‘awesome music to punch cones to’.

**** album review, The Brag ALBUM OF THE WEEK 25/8

Vessels album review 8/10 – Vice September 2006 ‘Wolf & Cub have made a rock record that doesn’t sound like any of these other jerk-bands full of boys who spend longer in the front of the mirror than their female housemates’

 My Festival Experience

Bliss N Eso
It was at the Great Escape Festival in Sydney. It was a really nice setting as the stage was set up alongside the Parramatta river. The only problem was about 15 minutes before the show it was raining and there was no crowd in front of the stage. So we where obviously like a little bit worried. Then about 5 minutes to show time, suddenly like clockwork the sun came out as well as a swarm of a few thousand people rowdy and ready to go crazy. Needless to say it was an awesome show and even better because it was in front of a home town crowd!

Ideal Lineup?
Outkast, Bubba Sparxxx, Mos Def Featuring The Roots, K-os, Rage Against the Machine, Dead Prez, Notorious B.I.G & 2pac (hey you said ideal! J)
