Interview
Access All Areas.net.au: Hey Cory, how’s It Going?
Trivium - Corey: Yeah I’m doing real good, we flew in today from Japan & I’ve been in my room most of the day on the phone talking to press, it’s a lot of time, but its good to be here in Australia.

Access All Areas.net.au: Well I’d like to welcome you guys back to Australia, how’s it feel to be back down under?
Trivium - Corey: Yeah its awesome, we love it down here, its always great for us to come down & play in your beautiful country. The shows are always great, the fans are always buzzing & going crazy & the girls are hot so what more could you want.

Access All Areas.net.au: Well its all about to kick back in for the band in the next couple months, with the release of your fourth record “Showgun” at the end of September. How is the band going at the moment?
Trivium - Corey: We’re really excited, its good to be getting back into the swing of things, time to dust off the rust & get back on with the show. We are excited to be starting again, we’ve got our new record which we’re really proud of & can’t wait for everyone to hear when it comes out, so yeah we’re just doing a whole bunch of press for our record at the moment & will be looking forward to playing shows in the near future.

Access All Areas.net.au: Well, the new record “Showgun” will be released on September 30, 2008. Can you tell us a little about the writing process for the record?
Trivium - Corey: Well we’re always writing really, whether its when we’re on tour or just hanging around the place, we always come up with new things like guitar riffs or drums or something. It really kicked in late last summer where we really started putting things together. We wrote through our touring to december & then took time to put everything together once the touring for our record “the crusade” was finished. We took some time to put everything together & really looked at how things could be done, some stuff was ripped apart & put back together with new ideas, but overall we’re really happy with what we came up with.

Access All Areas.net.au: With the new record, what musical direction was taken, was there a return to the more thrash sound of “the crusade” or a return to the more metalcore sounds of “ascendency” for the new record?
Trivium - Corey: With the music its really diverse. There’s stuff that’s really fast, stuff that’s really brutal & then there’s stuff that’s more melodic, so it’s a lot of different things. We put together something that really sounds good to us & really takes bits & pieces from previous sounds from records & combines them in certain sections, so our fans will be able to find bits they like & bits that are new & will hopefully like on the record.

Access All Areas.net.au: With “Showgun” on a vocal level, what direction of style would you say is used by Matt on the record, is there the great singing vocals similar to the last record, or some of the screaming style from past records?
Trivium - Corey: Yeah there’s a range of sounds, there’s sections where its matt singing, but then you have sections which work better with matt screaming. With the screaming, its not like what matt’s done before, its just being done to enhance sections & give something else to make it sound better. Fore example, like one part wasn’t sounding too well being sung so travis said “just f***ing scream it man” and it sounded really cool. So there’s a range in the vocals on the record, which will be new & hopefully enjoyable to our fans.

Access All Areas.net.au: With the record, you chose to use Nick Raskulinecz for the production. Do you feel this was a beneficial choice for the band in the resulting product that is your new release?
Trivium - Corey: Yeah, Nick was great. In the beginning we really weren’t sure who we would use for production, but we knew we wanted someone different so we could start fresh, new & different. We found Nick through a bunch of names we had sourced & we had heard some of his previous works which some of the guys in the band really dug. We flew Nick out to one of our shows & hung out with him & we found there that he was really cool & encouraging & was really the guy we wanted for the record. When he was in the studio with us he took us through a recording process we hadn’t done before, so it was new & fresh to us which helped in our project. He was really encouraging & helpful, but mainly he was energetic & was really interested in the project & we really got what we were after through working with him for the record.

Access All Areas.net.au: You are currently on a promotional tour of Australia for the record, you will be doing a show at the Horton Pavilion in Sydney on August 13. Are you guys excited about playing this show & can the aussie fans expect to hear much new material?
Trivium - Corey: Yeah, we’re really excited about the show, it’ll be great, we hear its at a great old theatre so should be interesting. We’re really looking forward to the show, the aussie fans always give us a great reaction & we love coming here to play. It’s good as its our first show in a while so it will help us get back on with our live shows in the near future. With the set, its going to be really fun, we’re doing 3 songs off the new record, as well as 6 older songs we haven’t done live in australia before. So it’ll be different & really fun for everyone who comes along to the show in Sydney.

Access All Areas.net.au: On this promo tour, will the band be doing many other commitments other than the show while here in Australia?
Trivium - Corey: Its really just more press. We’ve got another day full of interviews & then we do the show. After that we fly to melbourne to do some more press for the record & then we fly out of the country the next day, so it’s a short trip but its enjoyable, the press is good no matter how much we have to do & will be beneficial for the release of the record, so its good.

Access All Areas.net.au: Once this promo tour is done, what are the plans for trivium, what is the band up to, are you going on any tours back home in the states or europe?
Trivium - Corey: Well we start touring back home in september & will be doing a tour of the states, that tour will be really fun as we’ll be going to places we haven’t been to before, so its looking like fun. Other than that its just more touring in the new year.

Access All Areas.net.au: In the near future, can we expect to see a return of trivium to our shores for a more larger tour of the country in support of the new record “showgun”?
Trivium - Corey: Yeah, at the moment the tentative schedule is looking like april 2009, that’s when we would be coming back to do the usual places all bands usually do & this will be a much larger tour with more dates, we would do more shows here this time around, but we just don’t have any time, so keep a look out for us around then next year as it will be a really cool tour.

Access All Areas.net.au: Well thankyou for your time this evening, I hope you have a good time in Australia & good luck for the tours ahead.
Trivium - Corey: Thankyou & thankyou for the interview.

Biography
Florida metal titans Trivium, who have sold over half a million records worldwide since 2005, are proud to announce the release of Shogun, their third album for Roadrunner Records. Shogun will be released on September 27.

Critics and metalheads worldwide took notice when Trivium crashed the metal world in 2005, with the release of the Ascendancy album, landing them multiple magazine covers across the globe in less than a year and picking up "Best New Band" accolades almost everywhere they played. Intent on not delivering a 'part two' with their follow-up record, 2006's The Crusade took a slightly different direction, with cleaner singing and more varied influences. It retained their stunning signature guitar work and led to some enviable touring opportunities with bands such as Metallica and Iron Maiden.

Trivium have changed it up yet again on Shogun, choosing not to record in the familiar environs of their home state of Florida. Instead the band headed to Nashville, Tennessee to work with producer Nick Raskulinecz (Rush, Foo Fighters, Stone Sour). The result is a monolithic album that crystallizes the band's sound and showcases Trivium's finest elements. Vocalist/guitarist Matt Heafy is thrilled with the album, saying, "We made a cohesive, epic metal album that combines all of the ingredients of everything we feel we have ever done 'right' musically, while adding a new direction that the music called for. We had so much fun creating this album and hope our fans feel that energy when they listen."

Even Slayer's Kerry King, an undisputed heavy metal god, expressed excitement about touring with the band this fall on the "Unholy Alliance: Chapter 3" European tour. He commented to the UK's Total Guitar magazine, "I'll be at the side of the stage watching them. Great players like that make us want to do better."
Looks like the metal community is waiting with baited breath for Shogun.
