ARTIST INTERVIEW
Shinedown are an old school rock band …Kinda like POISON without the cheesiness of Brett Micahels and CO. They’re tearing up Australian radio at the moment with The Haleys comet song…” Second Chance” and they are about to hit the country for Soundwave. AAA’s David Holleran caught up with lead guitarist Zac Myers

Access All Areas.net.au: Coming out for Soundwave….is this your first trip to Australia??
Zac: For the band yeah ….I’ve been to Australia before

Access All Areas.net.au: Cause you’ve actually been touring and playing guitar since the age of 14
Zac: Yeah I loved the crowds doen there you guys are mental especially as a kid I loved it1

Access All Areas.net.au: do you get used to living out of a suit case…??
Zac: Definitely man, I been living in Hotel rooms for so long its almost surreal when I do get to go home…But its part of the rock and roll dream isn’t it??

Access All Areas.net.au: Second chance is huge on Australian radio at the moment, does it seem strange to be playing these songs to a new audience so long after they were originally made
Zac: Good to hear man.. This is the first time we get to tour a record to a new country. We got to play Europe like 5 times and now Australia and New Zealand. Plus we don’t really get to hear how well s single is doing until we’re in the country so that’s wicked news dude.

Access All Areas.net.au: Now you’ve played a few different roles in the band now..?
Zac: Yeah at first it was Bass then guitar then bass then guitar now lead guitar…So its good I’m back on guitar its always been my fisrt instrument and I love to play.

Access All Areas.net.au: The band was based initially around lead singer Brett & there’s a massive influence from the record label…..do they have a lot of creative control of the band..??
Zac: No more than any other band though. They pick the singles and help us with marketing and promotion etc. But at this stage of the band we’re making songs and people are liking them and that’s what its about you know.

Access All Areas.net.au: August last year you performed a free concert at the New York State Fair…and it all went crazy with 20,000 people showing up…….
Zac: Yeah dude it was mental. New Yorkers are so unforgiving to bands you know like the have some of the greatest bands of all time coming outta that city. So it was great to have a good show. 40 state troopers turned up to try and control the crowd …It was so rock and roll …so mental….Biggest show in NYS fair state history

Access All Areas.net.au: You offered fans the chance to ask questions of the band through the website and myspace… I thought I’d ask what the fans want to hear and use a couple??

Access All Areas.net.au: Jesse of Wisconsin asks is the songs Second Chance about an Oxycontin addiction??
Zac: Yes yes it is…That’s all I can say….

Access All Areas.net.au: Tamara of the UK asks ….How do you feel when a fan gets a tattoo of the band??…I’m getting one next week for my birthday
Zac: It really humbles us man. Like we have fans that have come to 70 shows. That’s amazing these people are spending the money the make to see our music. That’s possibly the coolest thing ever. When someone gets a tattoo of us it means that we have touched their life in some way and that’s pretty special.

ShineDown play Soundwave festival touring Australia throughout February and March. Second chance is out now through Atlantic Records.

Interview by Dave Holleran.
ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Once in a while, amidst the bullshit, half-assed, money hungry, no talent clone bands sucking their way to the top of the charts, there comes a band able to transcend that stereotype and bring some quality music to the masses. Shinedown is one of those bands.

‘The Sound Of Madness’, Shinedown’s third album is the Florida rockers' boldest effort to date. Like its two predecessors, 2003's Platinum, ‘Leave A Whisper’ and 2005's Gold, ‘Us And Them’, ‘it offers a brave and unsparing look into the soul and psyche amidst a fierce musical attack that, even in its quieter moments, vibrate with the passion, energy and focus of a band with limitless ambitions. “Arguably the best rock release of 2009 so far.” - Rockmusictoday
