ARTIST INTERVIEW
Access All Areas.net.au: So tell us your story thus far, how you got to where you are now?
Olivia Eden: Was born in Santa Monica, California. Mother moved me to a farm in Sydney. Piano kept me occupied on the farm. Studied classical singing for many years, loved it! Signed with Risky Records in 2000 and have been with them ever since. Have played in many gigs around London and Sydney. Album is going to be released on the 11 July and hopefully lots of people will like what they hear.

Access All Areas.net.au: Do you feel you have more control over your career as an independent singer/songwriter?
Olivia Eden: No I don't. A lot of people will say that being an independent artist is fantastic because you have control over your music. However, when you are an independent artist there is very little money invested in your talents and this makes it hard to create the vision that you have for your music. Music is expensive.

Access All Areas.net.au: Can you tell us a bit about your music?
Olivia Eden: I like music that gives a message and I am hopeful that I offer that in my music. I like hearing stories from different perspectives and I like creating different moods and styles of music to represent my collection of music.

Access All Areas.net.au: And how about your latest release?
Olivia Eden: My latest release is my album which is titled 'ordinary girl'. It tells an audience my story.

Access All Areas.net.au: How would you choose to describe your music to someone who was unfamiliar with it?
Olivia Eden: I have been told that I have a sound like the Corrs, Madonna, Tori Amos and Enya.

Access All Areas.net.au: Which artists are you and/or your music influenced by?
Olivia Eden: The artists above.

Access All Areas.net.au: When a fan goes to one of your shows, what can they expect?
Olivia Eden: A girl singing and playing her keyboard.

Access All Areas.net.au: What has been a major stepping stone for getting you where you are today?
Olivia Eden: Believing in my abilities and believing in the power of music.

Access All Areas.net.au: What are your plans from here?
Olivia Eden: To release my album which will hopefully reach the ears of Australians and the rest of the world.
ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Olivia has just completed her debut album, "Ordinary Girl", which is set to be released in early 2005.

Born in Hollywood, Olivia Eden is destined to be a star. Transposed at the age of eight from concrete jungle to the Australian bush, Olivia only had a piano to keep herself entertained.

Originally trained in classical and opera, Olivia rebelled in favour of Michael Jackson and George Michael and now writes songs that are clearly influenced by both sides of the spectrum.

"I love Enya and people who hear my stuff say I sound Celtic," she laughs. "Which is weird, because growing up, I mainly listened to Michael Jackson."

A chance meeting in a Bondi homewares shop, Abode, led Olivia to Risky Records. Although she initially auditioned to sing opera on an existing project, Olivia played her original songs to Stephen and Kris who subsequently asked her to work on her own CD.

An early track, Faithful Traveller, was originally written purely on the piano but has been transformed in the Risky studio.

Olivia compares the treatment of Faithful Traveller to William Orbit's production of Madonna's "Ray of Light". "The layering of the vocal harmonies and the synths in the studio have added a third dimension to my music," she says.

Despite her operatic beginnings, Olivia is passionate about pop. Nothing gives her greater pleasure than writing songs and she only needs a keyboard and a pen.

"The words are always the last thing that I write and it happens really naturally," Olivia says. "Sometimes I can write a song in 15 minutes. It's usually from a feeling inside myself, an anger or sadness or happiness."

 My Festival Experience

Funeral For A Friend
Well I guess the most memorable would be in 2005 when we played the first Australian Taste Of Chaos festival. It was the first night in Perth & the venue was like five or seven thousand & we were sure we’d be pretty unknown. We got up on stage & started playing & then we noticed the crowd & saw that pretty much everyone was singing the songs & we were like “did we sell all our cds in perth or something?”, so that was pretty memorable for me personally. Also playing the Warped tour in America, its like a 2 month travelling township or something, you play shows go hang out & then travel like a thousand miles & start over. There’s been other experiences, but those are probably the standouts for me.

Ideal Lineup?
Well for me I would have to say Nine Inch Nails who I saw at Redding the other year when they played before The Smashing Pumpkins. The set was just amazing & I’m not really even a fan of the band, but the set was just something they really play great. Also I’d probably say Killswitch Engage they are a great band & are good friends of mine, we toured Australia with them on our first tour & made good friends with them & yeah they just play great music & are great musicians I guess. There’s others I think but those would be the 2 I’d say off the top of my head.

Tips for attending Music Festivals?
Well I guess just drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated, stay out of the way of trouble & really just look after yourself & anyone who gets in trouble that you know & you should have a pretty good day.
