| Interview | Access All Areas.net.au: You’ve recently released your debut album here in Australia. How do you feel about it being released here? Nancy Elizabeth: I’m very excited. It’s my first record in Australia. I have never been done there. So many people have said how great it is in Australia, so I’m hoping my music will allow me to visit.
Access All Areas.net.au: I read that you played all of the instruments on the album, including some strange instruments like an Indian Harmonium and bouzouki. Do you feel like this allows you to give the album a more personal touch? Nancy Elizabeth: I didn’t actually play all of the instruments on there, but I did play a lot of them. I think it does help me to put a personal touch on the album. I am the one who knows what I want, so it does help if I am the personal playing the instrument. I’m not very proficient, but I have a good friend who plays all the instruments that I can’t. It’s my first album, so I wanted a really personal touch to it. Maybe the next album will have more of a band vibe.
Access All Areas.net.au: Early reviews of the album have suggested, that in some aspects, you recall artists like Radiohead, Talk Talk and Mogwai. What do you make of these comparisons? Nancy Elizabeth: To be honest, they blow me away. Talk Talk is one of my favourites. I love the comparisons. I love music all together. It’s taking silence and filling it with music and shapes.
Access All Areas.net.au: As mentioned earlier, you played most of the instruments on this album. Do you think it is important for an artist to have input into their material? Nancy Elizabeth: I think every artist is different. I wouldn’t recommend it for every artist, just because it might not work as well. For me, it’s currently working. If you create the song, then you have it at its most personal.
Access All Areas.net.au: What are you currently listening to? Nancy Elizabeth: At the moment, I’m listening to a lot of Led Zeppelin. I’m also listening to some older Bjork, like Debut and Vespertine.
Access All Areas.net.au: Can we expect to see you touring down here anytime soon? Nancy Elizabeth: For now, no. It’s just because it is such a long way away. We’ll see how the record goes and hopefully, if all goes well, I would love to be down there sometime next year.
Access All Areas.net.au: What inspired you to get into music? Nancy Elizabeth: It was a friend at school actually. His name was Denis Jones and for him, all he wanted was music. It was an accident really, but he introduced me to all these great bands. When I was younger, I also really liked bands like Blur and Smashing Pumpkins.
