| | | | | Interview | Access All Areas.net.au: Have you had the opportunity previously to release an EP or single or is this your first time? Maeder: Nah this is our first time.
Access All Areas.net.au: So you guys must be pretty stoked to have this opportunity to finally get your music out there and heard? Maeder: Yeah definitely! There’s been a lot of work to get to this stage and it’s just a starting point for us.
Access All Areas.net.au: Those who havn’t yet heard your music how would you best describe it? Maeder: Umm…. just roots and raw pub rock.!
Access All Areas.net.au: Very descriptive – love it!
Maeder: Laughs
Access All Areas.net.au: Now, as I said before you’ve got your EP being released at the end of August, from there do you guys plan to record and release a full album? Maeder: Yeah were basically releasing the EP, it was supposed to be a single but it’s more of a glorified single now so people get more idea of what we’re about. There will be an album and an album has been recorded and ready to go. We’re just going to release the EP and see how it goes and then probably release a single and depending how they go, then the album.
Access All Areas.net.au: Who are your influences and has this influence moved into your songwriting and music in general? Maeder: Definitely! One myself (Nic)… I was 11 years old and only learning and I heard ACDC’s ‘Hell’s Bells’ on the radio when I was 11 and that was it, that changed my life… I knew what I wanted to be and that I wanted to sing in a band so it was definitely a huge influence for me.
Access All Areas.net.au: You’re about to embark on a national tour supporting the Screaming Jets, that’s a pretty big gig to score? Maeder: Yeah definitely!
Access All Areas.net.au: How did you guys manage to score such a big gig? Maeder: No idea actually [laughs] – We were just asked and we thought that the Jets crowd would be responsive to what we’re doing and thought it would be a good opportunity to dip our toe into the water or the bath so thought it was a smart move.
Access All Areas.net.au: Obviously being based in Melbourne for the past years you’ve performed endless gigs locally but will this be your first national tour that you have embarked. Maeder: First tour yep
Access All Areas.net.au: You’ll get to perform at most capitals and some of the regional area’s but is there any place in particular you’re hanging to tour at? Maeder: Not really. We’re just pretty much happy to play as many places as possible. The more places, the better.
Access All Areas.net.au: And when can we expect your headlining tour? Maeder: Well that again depends on the album. First we’ll see the first singles’ response and how well it is received but we’d love to think in the next few months. We’ll wait till after the Jets tour and analyse that and take it one step at a time.
Access All Areas.net.au: When a fan goes to a Maeder show, what can they expect? Maeder: Bleeding ears!!! [laughs]. A lot of energy. A high energy show – expect nothing less.
Access All Areas.net.au: It seems that Maeder is being labelled as the next ACDC, does that bother you at all or do you feel any pressures from this?
Maeder: No matter who you are you you’re going to be compared to somebody. I guess its good to have that comparison, its an important process for them (fans) to understand. These songs were written by Nic and his brother and as we evolve we assume that our material will evolve too. In part, I guess we lent from ACDC but not deliberately but you can definitely hear it.
Access All Areas.net.au: It appears that you guys have been doing music for quite sometime having once been signed with Festival Mushroom as a different band and now to Blah Records/Warner Music, has there been any time where you thought it would happen or that you just had enough, or was it something that really didn’t phase you too much? Maeder: Definitely times where you wonder what’s happening, there are lots of ups downs and lots of disappointments but that’s normal for this industry. Just keep doing what you love and eventually something should happen – keep doing what you’re doing.
Access All Areas.net.au: Outside of touring, what is it that you like to do? Maeder: Table tennis! We’ve been recording the album at 16 studio’s in Sydney and they have a table tennis table there and in between sessions we’re always playing tournaments. We play in good spirits though – we’re not competitive… I’m just to good for them to beat (Seb). |
