ARTIST INTERVIEW
Access All Areas.net.au: How did the band come together?
Kathematics: I put the band together in Jan 2003. Lee-Roy (bass) was a friend already.

Access All Areas.net.au: Where did the band's name come from?
Kathematics: It's basically mathematics with a 'K'. It's kinda a personal joke too as I am totally useless at maths!
Access All Areas.net.au: Where did your interest in music come from?

Kathematics: ABBA as a kid.
Access All Areas.net.au: How do you describe your style of music?

Kathematics: Punchy, melodic, catchy, pop-rock.

Access All Areas.net.au: Who do you see as your musical influences?
Kathematics: Blondie and Green Day

Access All Areas.net.au: When a fan goes to one of your shows what can they expect?
Kathematics: Uptempo music that is catchy and fun with an energetic live show which includes interacting with the audience.

Access All Areas.net.au: How has the band progressed in the time you've spent together?
Kathematics: In almost three years and a few different line-ups, the band has released two EPs (the first independent, the second 'Do The Math' through Australian Records) played a heap of shows and done a regional tour of Victoria and scored radio-play around Australia and also the UK and Europe. We've done the "hard yards" and now it's time for us to move up a level but that is proving difficult
so I guess we'll just keep slogging away.

Access All Areas.net.au: Do you feel your style has changed?
Kathematics: Yeah, lately I've gone back to my punk roots. The latest EP is more raw and in your face but with a bit of diversity thrown in too.

Access All Areas.net.au: Do you prefer the recording or the live experience? Why?
Kathematics: Live definitely as most people say. Instant gratification I guess. They either love you or hate you (and lucky for us they usually love us!) Recording is a necessary evil as far as I'm concerned.

Access All Areas.net.au: What are your thoughts about the current musical climate within Australia?
Kathematics: How do we compete with a band like Wolfmother? Answer is, we don't. Guy bands have attitude and wear denim and girl singers are prissy princess', we fit no-where.

Access All Areas.net.au: How do you feel you fit into that climate?
Kathematics: Kathematics don't fit in at all. We are in a genre all our own which means the industry will never take us seriously.

Access All Areas.net.au: What have you learnt from being in the music industry?
Kathematics: It gets harder and harder the longer you are in it.

Access All Areas.net.au: Is there anyone you would like to record with?
Kathematics: Billy Joe Armstrong (Green Day) we would write the perfect 3-minute pop/punk hit!

Access All Areas.net.au: Is there anyone you would like to tour with?
Kathematics: See above. Also Blondie, and Magic Dirt, Spiderbait and The Spazzys would be a lot of fun!

Access All Areas.net.au: What is the plan from here on in?
Kathematics: Try to get our music out there for Joe Public to hear. I'm sick of playing to other musicians. The normal people out there who have heard us LOVE the music but getting it out there is the problem and generating a following is also a problem as no-one's heard our music. Catch 22.

Access All Areas.net.au: What can you tell us about your new release?
Kathematics: It's a 5 track EP called 'Do The Math' released in October 2005 through Australian Records. It's choc-full of melodic pop hooks and lovelorn and humouristic lyrics, apparently my trademark. At the moment it's only available at gigs but from early next year will be on sale at some Melb indie record stores. Anyone outside of Melb can check out www.kathematics.com and email us to organize getting a copy.

Access All Areas.net.au: Do you have any words of wisdom for any up and coming musicians?
Kathematics: It's not where you end up that counts, it's the journey that takes you there that's important.

Access All Areas.net.au: Do you feel you have more control over your career as an independent singer/songwriter?
Kathematics: Yes for sure. The key would be to be successful but still regain control.
ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Influenced by late 70's punk acts like Blondie, The Clash and Generation X, to current bands like Magic Dirt, Green Day and The Strokes, Kathematics remain hard to pigeon-hole, as they possess an alternative leaning combined with commercial appeal.

Formed in Melbourne in January 2003 by singer/guitarist/ songwriter Kath, Kathematics have played high profile venues such as The Esplanade Hotel, The Tote, The Green Room, The Rob Roy and The Empress and recently did their first regional tour of Victoria.

Kathematics released their self-titled debut EP independently in February 2004. The EP received airplay on Triple J, Nova, 3RRR, 3PBS and 4ZZZ in Brisbane and is now sold out.

The band has now released their second EP 'Do The Math' through Australian Records. The EP has already scored positive reviews and airplay on 3RRR, 3PBS and JOY FM.

Kathematics have also made inroads in the U.K through Mohican Records with legal downloading of tracks from their debut EP throughout the U.K and Europe where their music is also available through I Tunes.

 My Festival Experience

Sneaky Sound System
It’s too hard to pick one, we love festivals. In no particular order: Playing the big Dance Arena at Glastonbury 2008, Main Stage Good Vibrations 2007, Splendour in the Grass 2007, Big Day Out 2009...I could go on and on.

What would be your Ideal Lineup?
One stage with David Bowie, Queen (we’d have to bring Freddie back from the dead), Daft Punk, The Cure, Bloc Party, Prince & Bon Jovi (yes, Bon Jovi). There would be DJ sets in between by Sven Vath, Boys Noize and me old mate Ajax.

Favourite artist you've seen at a Music Festival? Daft Punk, David Bowie & Bloc Party

What are your tips for attending Music Festivals?
Enter with an open mind and leave with a twisted one.
