ARTIST INTERVIEW
After what seems like an eternity for loyal Infusion fans the boys are back with their first release since 2003 All Night Sun Light. David Holleran caught up with Frank Xavier to discuss the release, the tour …..And swine flu.

Manny was initially penciled in for a chat but took ill just before the interview prompting Frank to allay “Yeah Manny’s a wild boy he loves to get trashed”. ‘He’s probably not even sick,’ I ask has he been in touch with any bush pigs recently, no one can be sure but at least he is clear of the swine flu…Thankfully, because the lads are about to embark on their first major headlining tour for over 4 years.

Since their ARIA award winning Six feet above yesterday, the boys relocated to Brighton in the UK, but after spending so much tine touring the record, their efforts to slow down and harness creative energies, didn’t work out as planned. “You can get caught up in that touring cycle: explains Frank, “ Its all living out of suitcases, road trips and late nights’…’Its hard to be creative when ya knackered’…

The LP itself sounds inherently like an Infusion record, electro ballads veer to washed out 80’s sounding dépêche mode tunes, through to almost vocal “pop” house. Heavy on the keys and but with a focused live element of guitars and drums. Unfortunately for the boys the Cut Copy/Presets comparisons are abounds. But I digress; the lads initially from Wollongong on the NSW Sth coast are to the Aussie dance scene what the hilltops are to hip-hop. The guys that made a path for their luminaries to follow. Granted the hoods, are atop a far more envious empire, but Infusion can proudly boast mainstream success for the dance genre long before The Presets could get commercial radio play.

“Yeah its funny you should say that” Frank reiterates ‘ We’ve had a lot of people say that’, ‘you know it sounds a bit like Cut Copy, but the point is we’ve been making music since 97, well before they formed.’ “You know we’re mates with those guys and its great to be compared to them, but I wasn’t thinking about their music whilst creating ours” Comparisons and genre association aside though he does admit that there now is a larger market to play to. “I remember playing a place called Caringbah” he states to 9 people, it was wild as hell”. 9 people’s a far stretch from the thousands that group have now played to in their career with slots at Glastonbury, Big Day Out and more recently SXSW. Where they played the Aussie bbq with The Drones and formed a quasi friendship. “Yeah there’s heaps of buzz around The Drones after the conference and their New York showcase. “They are so much fun to hang with as well.

Hitting the roads of Australia throughout July before hitting Asia, I can’t help but ask how the tunes will translate live. “Well we’ve changed the live set up, says Frank. ‘It’s amazing to have a live drummer behind you and Manny playing guitars is awesome!” Infusion have always been renowned for a killer party driven live set, an energy they seem unable to capture live, “ Its funny playing live compared to the studio Frank” relays ‘ You cant always achieve live, what you can in the studio, and on another hand, playing live you want to have fun. “We’re still playing sets for the raver’s who wanna have fun and dance and lose control. And that’s why infusion will continue to make music. Not just as an amazing recording artist but as a live entity, that parallels great acts such as Crazy Penis and dare I say it The Presets.

All Night Sun light is in stores July 2nd and their run of shows kicks off at the Family in Brisbane the same day…. Check out LP track highights 2 player game, So soon, and Dog town.

 My Festival Experience

Every Time I Die
Your most memorable Festival moment or experience?
Download in 2005. it was such a great vibe the entire day and people seemed to really get into our set

Favourite Artist you’ve seen at a Music Festival?
when I was younger all I did was listen to bad religion so when I finally got to see them on a warped tour it was life changing.

What’s your ideal Festival line-up?
4 bands, 20 minute sets, free nachos and beer

What are your tips for attending Music Festivals?
Pace yourself. When we played ozzfest in 2004 there were dudes getting kicked out for being too drunk at 11am. You bought the ticket, at least take the ride
