ARTIST INTERVIEW
Access All Areas.net.au: Hey Peter, how’s it going for you today?
Evermore – Peter: Hey mate, sorry i think i’m a little late... yeah my day is going well, just organising the last few things for our tour & yeah just keeping busy, its been a pretty busy time lately, but its good.

Access All Areas.net.au: You have been busy, with the release of your third record in Truth Of The World, how has it been for you since its release?
Evermore – Peter: Well its been doing alright... i think anyway haha, with this record we were unsure of whether or not people would listen to it, but the signs are good. We have had some success so far with the singles & other things & signs are looking good... so hopefully it will be another successful release.

Access All Areas.net.au: You guys spent about 18 months working on the record, once you were done, did you feel you had completed the record you guys had wanted?
Evermore – Peter: Well to be honest, we didn’t actually know how this record would turn out until the last month... i know, we’re organised haha. The thing was, we’d written so many songs between us, we were unsure of what ones to go with with the concept we had for the record... so it took a while. We found ourselves in the end, with a collection of material which we found fit the concept of the record we wanted & produced this collection as well as we could to produce what is our third record.

Access All Areas.net.au: I believe this record was a conceptual record, what was the idea behind this?
Evermore – Peter: Well its funny, cause at first we didn’t really have a concept we just were trying to write material as we do... i had my songs, dan was doing his material & John was writing his lyrics & came up with this character in the track he wrote titled Truth Of The World & it was a news line & we found a character from this & we liked it & went from there. We found that with each song we created, it was like a change of stations or a flick in the channel to a different tv station, you got a different chapter of the characters story in a different style of song... so yeah we got that & its cool... but definitely shows how much you have to work on a concept record, its not as easy as we thought haha.

Access All Areas.net.au: With this record, you have a lot of different musical directions in the sound of the music, when you guys picked up your instruments to record did you have a central direction... or a few?
Evermore – Peter: Well we didn’t really have a direction as such, we all had a lot of varying musical directions when we first started work on the record. For example, John had done some production work & was right into the dance music & stuff like that... kinda like timbaland stuff... whereas Dan was into making more classical piano pieces which was interesting & me, i had the usual rock music that i like... so we had a few things. These came through in a song like Hey Boys & Girls which was a more dance song & we also have tracks which feature the classical piano & then we have the usual Evermore rock sound.

Access All Areas.net.au: Of course, the recording was done in the bands studio in Melbourne, was it fun to do the work for the record in your own studio?
Evermore – Peter: Yeah, this was so cool for us as we got to do things exactly how we wanted with no pressure of schedules or booking clashes or anything like that, so we could relax. I mean i remember times where i’d get up at midday & head down to the guys & start work then without any question as its how we worked & it worked well. The recording was a great time for us together & we really enjoyed the experience of recording this record.

Access All Areas.net.au: It is, of course, coming up on 10 years for the band... anything planned for the anniversary?
Evermore – Peter: To be honest, we haven’t planned or thought of anything... i mean the time we’ve spent possibly working on something was taken up by the record... so we haven’t got much at all. I guess our tour could be taken as a celebration of the time together... i think we’ll just make it a real party. We have been pretty busy with the singles... we just returned from South Africa where we filmed a new video & that was great & now we’re just exhausted... we had planned to do a year break but we ended up doing the record haha so yeah i guess we’ll just make this tour special & that will do.

Access All Areas.net.au: Besides music, do you have much you like to get up to?
Evermore – Peter: Well when i get time off i like to just take it easy you know... relax & just be a regular person. Dan does a bunch of production stuff & John does his share... really we never stop playing music or doing music, i guess we don’t know anything else so its just natural. I mean i’ve done the band since i was about 14 & never have had a proper job so to me music is my life & will surely be for a while to come.

Access All Areas.net.au: You have a tour of Australia coming up, you looking forward to getting back out on tour?
Evermore – Peter: Oh yeah, i love to get out & tour the Australian cities... whether its capital or regional tours, its always fun. I guess i prefer regional tours as we bus from place to place which makes it kind of a circus type thing, but the capitals are cool & flights can be fun. We have such a great bunch of fans here in Australia & they seem to always come out & support us when we come to play, wherever it may be. This is our... well its hard to think maybe our sixth or seventh major tour of Australia & they never cease to be fun.

Access All Areas.net.au: You are touring with End Of Fashion & The Sundance Kids... looking forward to playing with these artists?
Evermore – Peter: Yeah, these guys should be a heap of fun to tour with & we’re all looking forward to it. With these guys they play some great & fun rock so we can’t wait to jump on tour with them & together we should make up about a 20 to 30 party group so should be a fun circuit across the country.

Access All Areas.net.au: With the show, have you got a set planned out?
Evermore – Peter: Well its going to be very theatrical... i guess thats how i can only describe it. We’ll have songs from our new record, plus a stack of old material & i thihnk we’re going to do some alternate versions of our old material... possibly some acoustic or at least changed up versions. The show will have backdrops from all our videos & stuff like that & will be a real show for the fans to see... its something not done by many artists so it will be a really fun show.

Access All Areas.net.au: With touring around Australia over the years, any shows or highlights that stand out for you?
Evermore – Peter: Well... i’d have to say a fair few years back we played in my brothers birth town of Lismore at the university... it was a Mexican toga party & we were up on stage & it was rather unique... lots of sunbreros, togas & tequila. The funny thing was with the show, we were in a bar & Dan was so far from being legal it wasn’t funny... but we got away with that & all went well, thats a good night for me though.

Access All Areas.net.au: After the tour is done, you guys got much coming up?
Evermore – Peter: Well after the Australian tour, we do a tour of New Zealand... then we take the whole show over to New York for a run of shows & then i think we got some stuff in Europe & then probably back home, so just keeping busy really.

Access All Areas.net.au: Well Peter, it was a pleasure speaking with you, thanks for your time & all the best for the tour.
Evermore – Peter: Thanks Ben, it was nice talking to you today, bye.

INTERVIEW - MAY 30 2007

Access All Areas.net.au: So Dann, you’ve got the Light Up The Night tour coming up real soon…
Dann Hume (Evermore): Yes, we do! It’s kind of cliché to say it’s going to be good - I’ve said that for pretty much every tour, you know [laughs]. But I just can’t help but say it again. It’s going to be very different for us – playing theatres. And we’re bringing a choir to most of the shows and that kind of adds another edge of excitement. I think we basically just rehearse with them on the day. Professional musos, those orchestra types and choir types, they only do the rehearsing on the day - they’re not like us ‘fan’ musicians who take months to learn songs [laughs]. But no, it’s going to be fun. I don’t know how to not be cliché when you’re hyping up a tour - I’m just really excited about it and hopefully people will get excited about it too.

Access All Areas.net.au: And you’ve also managed to snag UK sensation Aqualung as your support!
Dann Hume (Evermore): Aqualung is probably the most exciting support we’ve ever had. For one, I can’t even believe he wants to support us so it’s quite exciting. I’ve seen some live DVDs of his and he’s mental, so it’s good, it’s going to be really good.

Access All Areas.net.au: How is this tour going to differ from previous shows?
Dann Hume (Evermore): Because we’ve had a few weeks off while we’re rehearsing and in between trying to write choir parts and doing some more songs off Real Life, we were throwing some new songs in the mix to pass the time. We’ve never really got into playing brand new songs live because you don’t feel like it’s done. Then you play it and someone says it’s not very good and you’re like ‘Well it’s not done!’ Often we’ve tried it before and the crowd’s been so drunk that they didn’t even notice, you know [laughs].

Dann Hume (Evermore): Because it’s a theatre kind of environment and they feel quite finished already, we’re going to crank some new ones out and see what people think. I’m looking forward to seeing the reactions because it’s very different, it’s very sort of drum heavy and mainly groove based kind of songs. So it’s very different and I guess we’ll look at the faces in the front row and see their expressions.

Access All Areas.net.au: How is the next record coming along?
Dann Hume (Evermore): We’ve got a lot of songs (and we all write songs) so it’s not like we have to wait until twelve songs are written – twelve songs were written probably a few weeks after Real Life came out [laughs]. It’s just about finding the right songs and deciding the new location you want to take the music. Especially with three writers – and we all like such a wide range of music – we could easily go a lot heavier or even way lighter – we’ve got so many piano ballads just sitting around. It could go anywhere – it’s just about deciding where you want to take it.

Dann Hume (Evermore): But, I think this next one is going to be pretty different. I think we are going to disappear off the face of the planet for about six months and then come back and I don’t know if people will even recognize us. We’ve played a few songs to a few mates and they are always like ‘Oh, well I like it but um, yeah.’ It’s not the pop radio sort [of music] or anything, which is good

Access All Areas.net.au: Do you have another smash hit single like ‘Light Surrounding You’ up your sleeve?
Dann Hume (Evermore): I guess, I mean I’ve always liked Light Surrounding You because it’s such a simple song and it’s kind of reminiscent of songs that were coming out quite a long time ago. And the fact that it hasn’t got too much holding it up – it’s really just a song and the music behind it isn’t really trying to take away from what the melody and lyrics are, so I like that.

Dann Hume (Evermore): When I wrote Light Surrounding You, I didn’t even think it was a single. I just thought it was a nice little song and I enjoyed playing it on acoustic guitar. When I write, I don’t even think in the ‘single’ way. I just think ‘Oh yeah, this is a good song, I’ll keep working on that.’ Some people think that we’re quite a single orientated band but when we’re in the studio the word hardly ever comes up. We just want to make a record - we’re not too precious about what goes out first, I mean we just make the records and then let people argue...

Dann Hume (Evermore): I know some bands get really obsessive, like ‘This has to be the third single!’ but I’m like, ‘Whatever. I can’t be bothered; we made the record - I’m done. I’m moving on.’ [laughs]

Access All Areas.net.au: What do you think was it about Light Surrounding You that made it such a success?
Dann Hume (Evermore): It’s kind of amazing, the reaction it got. When we play it live I can see people connecting with it and associating their life with it, which I’m sure is very different to the life I associate with it. I like the fact that it’s not too descriptive, it doesn’t say exactly what it’s about and so people can’t associate anything with it – which I like. People ask me what it’s about, and then they always get disappointed, because they think it’s about some break up, but its sort of… not. [laughs]

Access All Areas.net.au: What happened to the whole American tour you had planned earlier in the year?
Dann Hume (Evermore): Oh, we were doing some American shows. We got offered a few tours and it’s just like… [We were] offered to support some really pop band, and we were like ‘I don’t know if that’s what we want to do.’ And then we got offered supporting some heavy hard rock act. I guess it really felt like no one understood what we were trying to do, as far as trying to book us tours. We’ve done a few shows, but until we actually get the ball rolling over there there’s no point just going and doing fifty shows and probably splitting up because we hate each other so much [laughs].

Oh and American food… I mean, really. We go there for a month and we all start going on these massive diets because the food is so fatty! We end up skipping lunch half the time.

Access All Areas.net.au: Are there any plans to head back over there after the Australian tour?
Dann Hume (Evermore): We actually planned to go after this tour, we had a big plan to go the US and we actually had dates booked. We’re just now not sure if we even want to do it because we kind of just want to go do out new record. Which is kind of selfish, we’d rather just stay in the studio the whole time [laughs]. I guess we just feel like the next record is going to be so much more intense and so much more of a statement that we kind of wonder if we can even be bothered slaving in the US for a year on something that we feel like we’ve already moved on and [knowing] we’ve got something better than this.

Dann Hume (Evermore): So we’re just questioning the whole idea. But it’s still up in the air there’s still dates booked, we’re just not really sure if we should… I don’t know, we just want to do the Australian tour and see how we go - I’m looking forward to this. I mean, I don’t have some mad ambition to conquer the US. I’m pretty happy here, playing shows. I prefer Australia to America anyway [laughs]. I prefer the people and just the general vibe.

Dann Hume (Evermore): I guess we really want to play a lot of shows in Europe at some point. We’ve done some shows over there and I think people seem to get it; they seem to understand where we’re coming from.

Access All Areas.net.au: Yes I heard you guys even recorded a French version of It’s Too Late?
Dann Hume (Evermore): It’s funny, you know it was in the top 20 in France or something, so yeah that was exciting. We just got a call saying ‘It’s doing really well in France, do you want to do a French version?’ And we thought yeah, we’ll do it for laughs; and then we sent it over and it did really well! But they can’t really get into any other songs because they’re all back in English. Unless we do a whole album recorded in French, which I’ll doubt we’ll do [laughs].

Interview by Jarrad Seng

Access All Areas.net.au: You boys are playing at the Pyramid Rock Festival on NYE with bands like Silverchair and The Living End. Do you guys like playing music festivals?

Dan: Yeah. We love it. We’re some kind of fruitcakes (laughs). It’s a whole day festival and the bands are there the whole day. Some people tend to think that the bands just rock up five minutes before they play and then leave straight after they’ve left the stage. It’s not true. Everyone is just hanging out and watching the bands. It’s easy to relate to other musicians because they all do the same thing and are there for the same reason. It’s just a lot of fun and you get to see a lot of the bands.

Access All Areas.net.au: Are there any bands that you want to go see?

Dan: I’ve been a massive Chair fan from the age of like, 12. I’m going to be watching that one. Probably going nuts (laughs).

Access All Areas.net.au: What was it like playing at the Make Poverty History concert?

Dan: Like unbelievable. It’s probably the most elated I’ve ever been on stage. There was just this amazing vibe going round, both onstage and offstage. Everyone was just giving everything that they had and it was just amazing. There were no sound checks, so bands just came on and played their 6 songs. It was just so moving. It was just giving such a great positive message.

Access All Areas.net.au: You’re about to release a live version of ‘Stand By Me’, which was recorded at that concert. What’s the move behind this?

Dan: Basically, each act would just go onstage and play all their hits. Everyone was just so busy and trying to fit everything in. None of the other bands were really taking it down and connecting with the audience. Everyone was just playing all their hits. Before each show, we usually get together and sing ‘Stand By Me’, the Lennon version. We said to each other “Why don’t we play this?”. So we had everyone running around and trying to learn the song before we hit the stage. We just added it into our set list and everyone was floored. The whole audience was singing along and they were so loud. It was such an amazing feeling. Afterwards we thought that we could help the campaign. So now we’re releasing it only on iTunes and all proceeds go to the Make Poverty History charity.

Access All Areas.net.au: How do you feel about doing the whole Big Day Out tour this year?

Dan: Last time we only did the East Coast, and I think it was on the purple stage. It was only 7 – 10 thousand people last time, but it was still a pretty big thing for us back then. This time we’re playing on the main stage, which is a massive thing for us. We’re playing in front of, like, 20,000 people. Since the last BDO, we’ve played festivals like Live and Local and the Make Poverty History. We’ve done so many shows that I don’t think we’re really worried about it much. Hopefully we’ll make some more fans if we’re playing on a bigger stage. We’re playing in the middle of the afternoon, which means that we can’t have lights or projections. We’re trying to work out some cool staging ideas at the moment.

Access All Areas.net.au: What are you currently listening to?

Dan: I’m going through a chronic Beatles stage at the moment. There was a lot of stuff that I didn’t own. I’m just listening to a lot of it. I’m loving The White Album and Sgt. Peppers. I’ve just been lying there and been blowed away by all of it. They just had some great ideas and were continually on a roll. There’s also current stuff. I recently bought Ben Kweller and The Killers new albums. They are really good. Then I’m listening to some oldies like Van Morrison and Tom Waits.

Access All Areas.net.au: ‘Real Life’ has been a lot more successful than ‘Dreams’. Why do you think this is?

Dan: ‘Dreams’ really found fans for us, so we have to thank that album for that. Real Life recently went platinum, but that doesn’t mean that we’re done. We’re continually learning and trying new things with our music. We don’t wanna peak just yet (laughs). You can’t compare the two, because it’s like comparing children. There are some really good memories in that album. A lot of live experience came from ‘Dreams’. We learnt some valuable lessons for the second album. We’re now living in the city, so perspectives have changed. The first album was very inward looking and distant, whereas the second was outward looking. It’s more personal and about relationships.

Access All Areas.net.au: What artists did you guys grow up listening to?

Dan: A lot of different stuff. We listened to a lot of albums instead of artists, because sometimes artists would release really bad stuff compared to other material. There was a lot of Kinks and Jimi Hendrix at times. After that there was some Crowded House, The Who and The Beatles. Music would always be changing. Sometimes we’d listen to The Police and Pink Floyd. Some music is more than just notes and words. It’s an experience. Pink Floyd had a massive influence on ‘Dreams’. I remember one night; I sat down and put on ‘Dark Side of the Moon’. I turned off all the lights and turned on the surround sound. I lied down and listened. Everything I thought I knew about music completely went out the window that night.

Access All Areas.net.au: Do you have any New Years Resolutions?

Dan: Yeah. I’ve decided not to watch as many ads. There are just some these days that ruin TV and society. I’ve also got to stop biting my fingernails. The thing is though, that we grow from mistakes. We learn from them. I might even try and find true love this year (laughs).

Access All Areas.net.au: What plans do Evermore have for 2007?

Dan: We’ll continue playing festivals and stuff, and then we’re going to head over to the States. We’ll come back and tour Australia again before heading off to the States. We’re going to try and see how it goes there. I think after that, we’ll head back into the studio. We want to get in there as soon as possible. We’re 3 songwriters so we have so many ideas just floating around. There’s no point in waiting around 3 years to record stuff.

Access All Areas.net.au: Thanks Dan. Have a good day.

Dan: Thanks mate. You too.

Interview by Simon Finck

INTERVIEW - 7TH NOVEMBER 2006

Access All Areas.net.au: How's the Coke Live tour been going for you so far?
Peter: It’s been really good – it's the last night tonight and bit sad really but there's a party at the end of it.

Jon: It's actually my birthday tomorrow so at midnight... [laughs]

Dann: What's interesting, because we're last, the party will get started while we're playing so we're going to have to kind of party extra hard to keep up with them because I kind of get the feeling that once we've done our signing everyone will be quite partied already!

Access All Areas.net.au: Headlining one hell of a rock tour – Coke Live N Local, did you ever expect anything like that coming in to this year?
Jon: I don't think we quite realised how big these shows were going to be, like you know we've played some of these venues supporting Split Enz like six months ago that was a great tour...

Dann: ...and because that was sitting down you don't realise how many people are in the crowd and this is totally different because it's all kids and they’re all jumping around having a great time making themselves heard.

Access All Areas.net.au: When you were first approached to join the Coke Live N Local tour this year what was your instant reaction?
Jon: I think we're pretty excited because it seemed like a really good lineup of bands, lots of different sounds going on and sounded like a good opportunity to probably play to some kids who couldn't get to our other shows like over 18s so we were really keen.

Access All Areas.net.au: Any favourite bands on the bill?
Dann: I'm actually really enjoying After The Fall and End Of Fashion. We've seen End Of Fashion a lot of times, we've done shows with them, but we haven't seen After The Fall

Peter: I dig After The Fall

Dann: ...and Pete's single so he's quite excited about the Veronicas! [laughs]

Access All Areas.net.au: You've been blogging a lot on your myspace site that you're next video clip for 'Unbreakable' is being filmed during the Coke Live tour, and encouraging fans to create banners and the like, has there been a huge reaction to that?
Jon: Basically last night I told the crowd that we're filming it and they went mental, they went ballistic for like the whole song...

Dann: I think we should say it before every show from now on we're filming our next video...

Access All Areas.net.au: Everyone wants their five minutes of fame…

Jon: Everyone wants it, they love the camera!

Peter: They've been making really cool signs, really creative signs sort of like "I Love You Dan", "Marry Me", "I Love Evermore"...
Dann: ...and no no one girl made this sort of heart that had the crack in it... a broken heart.

Access All Areas.net.au: And when can we expect the video clip to drop?
Jon: When its finished [laughs]
Dann: We've done it on film so its going to take a little time to process and spread out and get it together.

Access All Areas.net.au: Ok so this is the last show of the Coke tour, is there any goss from this tour; bad habits from other bands, anything that's happened on the road?
Jon: I think the roadies loaded some gear today [laughs]
Dann: Talk of something happening during the Veronicas bit that might involve shirtlessness... it's a sign of affection!

Access All Areas.net.au: Congrats on the success of your second album 'Real Life' and 'Dreams', have you been surprised by the success you've had with both these albums?
Jon: I think its always every time, officially last night for us just seeing the crowd getting in to it and knowing so many of the songs and it's like wow you sort of don't notice the things building up and the momentum that we're getting, but I think most of the time it's a pretty gradual thing for us because we've been doing this for quite a few years...

Dann: we've been playing in a band for like eight years or something now...

Jon: We're almost veterans.

It's always surprising how the way it turns out.

Jon: I am 23 and I started playing guitar at 13.

Dann: We've been doing it for nearly ten years. We're still probably the youngest band on this tour [laughs].

Access All Areas.net.au: So what's the plans for 2007 and ahead?
We’ve got our album coming out in America and Europe...

Peter: Big Day Out that will be the first thing...

Jon: So it's looking like a busy year...

Jon: I think we're going to be spending more time overseas and then working on a new album at the end of the year.
ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Consider everything you think you know about Evermore. Run through their history, of brothers Jon, Peter and Dann Hume growing up in the rural New Zealand town of Feilding and finding their feet as musicians. Reflect on their breakthrough 2004 debut Dreams and its beautifully crafted follow-up, 2006’s Real Life, selling platinum and double platinum respectively. Look at their six ARIA Award nominations, two NZ Music Awards, Channel [V] and MTV gongs, and the high esteem in which music fans and peers hold them. Gather those thoughts for a moment – then get ready to be blown away.

“It’s the album we’ve wanted to make since we started the band,” says singer and guitarist Jon, 25. “It's a concept album that takes inspiration from trashy media and political propaganda, and turns it into a fun, over the top rock'n'roll show.”

It’s an impressive united vision that began as abstract thoughts and came together into a solid concept over 18 months in the band’s studio near their new home city of Melbourne.

The result, the beautifully crafted Truth Of The World: Welcome To The Show, is one of the most ambitious albums you’ll ever hear. A grandiose piece of music that plays out like a modern brave new world rock opera, its foundation is built on a fictional news broadcast and branches out to paint aural pictures of a space saturated with cheap consumer pleasures, ads, channelsurfing
sound effects and catchphrases woven into a rich musical tapestry.

“We put all our ideas down on paper if as we were writing a movie script. The scenes dictated how the music should sound under it, so it pushed us in different directions musically and vocally.” Jon adds. “We came up with the concept and followed it through completely, ruthlessly. Anything that didn’t fit in 100 per cent with what we were trying to achieve, we just threw it out.” And while it takes a daring band to attempt such a grand feat, it takes a truly great one to execute it to perfection.

“I really wanted a writing challenge and to find some kind of voice to say things in a way we hadn’t before,” Dann says. “You need confidence, but I think we’ve always been quietly confident. In the studio, you have to think you can pull off anything.”

Produced exquisitely by Jon, Truth Of The World certainly flows like a single piece of music with lyrics and melodies thread seamlessly between very different songs. Synth-rock stompers “Between The Lines” and “Hey Boys And Girls (Truth Of The World Pt. 2)” showcase the band at
their swaggering confident best. Then there’s the typewriter-tapping “Front Page Story/Diamonds In The River”, which moves from a melancholic ivory-tinkering ballad into a tribal groove-laden epic. “Tonight On The Show (Truth Of The World Pt. 1)” and the later
“Infotainmentology (Truth Of The World Pt. 3)”, feature complementing melodies and infectious Beatlesque pop breakdowns shine a light on the skill of both band and producer to weave together so many pieces of music together as a focused and cohesive whole.

“We had a very clear idea the album should run together as one piece of music, and while the lyrics are all on similar subjects, the music is diverse to say the least,” Jon says. “I knew it was going to be self-produced and that was part of the drive that really pushed us to go beyond our limits. There was no-one else there saying, ‘Hey, that’s probably not a good idea.’ It was just
us bouncing ideas off each other – and some of them got pretty crazy by the end.”

Dann agrees: “Everything we did, the more extreme the better. It was like, ‘Let’s get 12 people in the room to scream as loud as they can’ or ‘What if we use a sample of Hitler at Nuremburg rally?’. Every time we just tried to do something more full on, it felt right. I was writing the outro on one song, and it was such an over-the-top melody, I thought, ‘What’s the most ridiculous words, the most mundane words, I could put over this?’ So I had the idea for, ‘And now a word from our sponsors,’ which skews it.”

The dense musical and thematic production is buoyed by a cast of characters and sampled broadcast voices – many played with wonderful dramatic timing by Dann – and wry humour that the trio weave throughout the set. Sure, it’s over-the-top and loaded with provocative ideas, but it’s always engaging and, importantly, entertaining.

“We felt it was important to put the humour in there,” notes keyboardist and bassist Peter, 23.

“The whole thing is broaching on some full-on subject material, but we didn’t want it to sound preachy or as if we’re taking sides. It’s almost like playing devil’s advocate and messing with things, distorting reality – doing things certain media does every day! But it’s also just having fun and wallowing in the kaleidoscope of the modern world.”

“The lyrical tone of the albums keeps changing throughout, so you don't know what's coming next,” Jon says. “Is it serious or a joke? Is it political or ironic? Politics, Media, Drugs, War… why can most albums only talk about love or loss? Well there's that in there too, but we had a lot of fun with these songs. Nothing was sacred and anything could be mocked, including ourselves.

I guess you could say there are some pretty dark themes in there. We definitely explored some new territory, there are numerous ads for 'Truthogen' a prescription drug that heightens your viewing experience. I guess part of it is in the family history, there are a few skeletons in the
closet. It's not the squeaky clean story a lot of people think.”

“We really just wanted to make things fresh again. We felt like resetting, as if we were a new band coming out and had no idea what the music industry was like, and just make the kind of music we’d like to hear,” Peter adds. “Albums are totally underrated these days. People say it’s the death of the album, but I don’t think so. I grew up listening to albums and the idea of listening to Dark Side of the Moon with the lights off or the Who’s Quadrophenia; to me it’s still the ultimate musical artform.”

 My Festival Experience

Bliss N Eso
It was at the Great Escape Festival in Sydney. It was a really nice setting as the stage was set up alongside the Parramatta river. The only problem was about 15 minutes before the show it was raining and there was no crowd in front of the stage. So we where obviously like a little bit worried. Then about 5 minutes to show time, suddenly like clockwork the sun came out as well as a swarm of a few thousand people rowdy and ready to go crazy. Needless to say it was an awesome show and even better because it was in front of a home town crowd!

Ideal Lineup?
Outkast, Bubba Sparxxx, Mos Def Featuring The Roots, K-os, Rage Against the Machine, Dead Prez, Notorious B.I.G & 2pac (hey you said ideal! J)
