| Interview | Access All Areas.net.au: Can you tell us a bit about your new single ‘Three Small Words? Downstairs Rising: Three small words is our second song off our ep “…Taken”. It’s in my opinion the most diverse song on that E.P, it has the best dynamic range, from the soft feel donated by the strings and piano to the rock elements coming from the guitar distortion in the chorus and the particular drum beat used. It was also the most complex song to record and mix due to the number of layers in it.
Access All Areas.net.au: You guys are touring quite extensively for the rest of the year, how would you best describe a Downstairs Rising live show? Downstairs Rising: We are yet to experience the same show, feeling, and crowd twice. Every show there is a new stage a new feel and a new crowd showcase to. In saying this we always hit the stage the best we can, we love what we do and hope those in front of us do too. A lot of injuries have been obtained through our live show, ranging from the occasional neck injury to the recent lacerated forehead Brendon suffered thanks to his guitar acrobatics. But his dislocated knee onstage was by far the most fun... He finished our set though, lying onstage next to the foldback. So I guess at times we can get too much into it. I guess you will just have to come along and see for yourself!!!
Access All Areas.net.au: Repeat Offender support! You must be excited to have scored that leg? Downstairs Rising: RO have been a family band for a while now, we have played a few shows in the past with them down here in Sydney. They are tops guys to be around and both our sounds work well with each other. So I guess we were bound to get stuck with them again sooner or later! And those who don’t know them – check them out, they’re a band everyone should get into!!
Access All Areas.net.au: I’m intrigued by your sixth member of the band – Pinky?? Downstairs Rising: Pinky is a stuffed pink elephant, which has been with us since day one. As our sixth member / Mascot, He lives out the “Rock Star” life. Turns up to a gig (schofferd Of course) sits there and doesn’t set up anything, gets helped up on stage and after the show is the only one who has swarms of ladies after him. It’s getting to us now after a year, sure we’ll faze him out over time and try and bring the cute and cuddly image to the stage with out him!
Access All Areas.net.au: For those who haven’t yet heard Downstairs Rising, how would you describe your style of music? Downstairs Rising: Melodic Rock, That’s very broad in It self these days, we don’t write any one type of music style, what ever comes out we run with. So from slow rock driven songs to upbeat dance around your lounge room like an idiot songs is a typical sound that Downstairs Rising has now become familiar with.
Access All Areas.net.au: For those who have heard Downstairs Rising, what’s something that they may not know about the band? Downstairs Rising: Well apart from our close friends and family, and anyone who has seen our stage show, people that have heard us may not be aware of how little we take ourselves seriously. Obviously enough to pull a tight set together and rock out onstage but at the same time the thing that makes us all so close together is the fact that one of us for instance could make a funny about something and for the next 3 months it keeps going and evolving and becomes so abstract that it no longer makes any sense to anyone around us, but perfect sense to all of us. We all have a whacked sense of humour, you either love it or hate it. You would have to see our video on the end our ep to understand it fully…
Access All Areas.net.au: Any stories from the road you can share/band rituals/anything exciting and super juicy!? Downstairs Rising: OH juicy, we love juicy. I know the brothers (Simon (BASS) & Brendon (GUITAR)) each own embroidered Downstairs Rising Boxer shorts, which were a present for their birthday’s. As far as I know they wear them at every show. There was a funny story awhile back, which happened out at their first gig in Lithgow, Sydney. Without going into details, lets just say we were all front row to a live Jerry Springer cross WWF show involving the locals, only difference is we had real police stepping in and random washing baskets being used instead of the chair!! . Oh what a memory.
Access All Areas.net.au: What’s ahead for Downstairs Rising? Downstairs Rising: At this point we have an overwhelming request for our new songs in which we play live. Our sound has matured since a year ago when we released “…Taken”, so with this we are now in pre production for another release for late this year or early next. We want to hit the road as much as possible to try and escape the Sydney scene, we love it but want to take what we have and explore the unknown. |
| Biography | | DSR formed in April of 2006 All 6 members have grown from there own musical background and have come together to keep their friendships and love for music strong. Guitarist Brendon and Drummer Adam have been playing in and out of bands and jamming since lil' pups. Brendon met vocalist David one night. Lengthy conversation lead to seeing him recording his former band in Brendon's home studio. These musicians as a collective became "A Promise Kept". Adding to the bands sound layers to achieve the sound they were after in early/mid 2006, saw adding long time friend Pinky for his diversification in musical knowledge, Simon for the low end and Guffo for that melodic edge, to the band. Now facing a stage with a new 6 piece line up a new name "Downstairs Rising", DSR prepare to deliver an unmatchable sound for the worlds ears to hear......... The world keeps listening....... |
